Ramanathaswamy Temple Overview

Ranked 1 of 10 sightseeing in Ramanathapuram

Ramanathaswamy Temple is one of the most famous Hindu temples and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated on the island near Rameswaram, this temple was built in the 12th century AD. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that Lord Rama prayed to Lord Shiva at this place,  during his march toards Lanka for the war with the demon king Ravana. This temple is also one of the holiest places of India and also forms a part of the Char Dham shrines. It is also one of the twelve Jyotirlingams, making it especially revered.

The architecture of this temple comprises high compound walls on all its sides, with the ones from east to west measuring 865 ft, while the ones from north to south measuring 657 ft. It also comprises huge towers called ‘gopurams’, at its east and west, along with gate towers on its north and south. The temple also has long corridors inside its main structure, that run between huge colonnades on 5 ft high platforms. Its outer corridors consist of 1200 pillars, with each having a height of 30 ft from floor to the centre of the roof. The Shivaratri celebrations held here in the Tamil month of Maasi, i.e around February and March, is a major attraction.

Only shiva dham out of four dhams in India

The architecture of temple is really great, it is believed that Rama after killing Ravana came to Rameshwaram and realized that they had a sin because Ravana was a bharaman. So to get rid of that sin they had to worship Shiva and thats why it is a shiva temple. The temple has shiva linga made by Sita(wife of rama) by sand and they even have shiva linga which hanuman brought from kailash mountain. There are a few steps which you should follow before the main darshan:1- At 5 am there's "Mani" darshan for which you need to pay Rs 50(earlier there were two tickets 50 and 10 but now they only have Rs 50 option). Be in the line at 4:30 so that you get free within 40 minutes.2-After mani darshan go to the sea, the sea is around 200 meters from the temple, take Bath there. There are no waves in the sea, it is believed that the sea surrendered to Rama and since then the sea in Rameshwaram is calm.3- After taking Bath from the sea go to the temple and take Bath from 22 wells, it is believed that before praying rama had to take Bath from 22 holy rivers of Including ganga and yamuna) to get himself pure, so he made all these rivers in a well by his bow and arrow}, the ticket price to all the 22 rivers Bath is Rs 25 but its better to take a guide outside temple, they will charge 250 per person and you don't need to stand in queue.4- after the snanam(bath) from all 22 wells, change the clothes or dry yourself and then go back to the temple and do the darshan. It's a great experience and something different from all other temples.Note- camera or any electronic gadget is not allowed and it is not recommended to wear watches.
