Rangit Valley Passenger Cable Car Overview

Ranked 10 of 77 sightseeing in Darjeeling

Popularly known as the Ropeway, the Darjeeling-Rangit Valley Passenger Cable Car is India's oldest passenger ropeway and connects Darjeeling with Singla Bazaar at the bottom of the valley.

The renovated cable car terminal station is about 3 km north of the town and is situated at what is known as the North Point, near the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. Floating high above the lush green valley, the cable car that is supported on a monocable covers a distance of about 2 km and takes about half an hour to reach the Takavar tea estate.

It is an absolutely exhilarating experience to travel through the misty clouds and get a bird’s eye view of the lush green tea plantations beneath. A ride definitely not recommended for the faint hearted.

Long duration Ropeway

It is located near to the Padmaja Naidu Zoological Park. We reached the top side(ropeway). Ticket per person is 175 rupees(up and down) and duration 40 minutes. It covers a life insurance of 1 lakh rupees also. Ropeway is properly maintained. We saw many tea estates, valleys. At bottom we ate snacks. From where also we see the Kanchenjaunga. It carries 6 persons. Overall it is very good.

Ride up the hills

The cable car rise through Rangit Valley is all more interesting on getting a bird's eye view of the mountains. It feels to be in the seventh world as it crosses among the hills. A bit risky ride if you are afraid of heights which is otherwise a life time experience to cherish.

Nice ride to enjoy Tea Gardens and Mountains

One of the best ways to experience the panoramic views that Darjeeling is so famous for, is by taking a ride on the ropeway. One has board the cable car from Singamari near Darjeeling Chowk Bazaar. It takes about 40 minutes to travel from an altitude of about 7, 000 ft. Down to 244m where the last station Singla Bazar is located. The view is extremely mesmerizing as one passes through clouds or fog, sometime gives u feeling of a open hello ride inside the clouds. The ride is worth the cost u pay and is one of the longest cable ride in India with a steep climb and dense trees and tea gardens.

Will get a good view

We reached at 11. 15 on Wednesday. It took around 1. 15 mins to get inside cable car. Looks like cars are less, and they need to wait before sending car. It was good view you can see big landscape full of tea gardens. I guess this is one of the best sightseeing places in Darjeeling.

Lovely view of the tea gardens. Shouldn't be missed.

We were at first quite scared. Seeing the height and the slope. Jaye-nai jaye---jaye-nai jaye. (my mom, over the phone, had strictly forbidden us to take the cable car ride) But then. We did gather the courage to take the ride of four only two of us went for it. It is not at all scary or anything. It goes at a very slow speed. Giving us enough time to enjoy the beauty of the tea gardens below. We loved the journey.

On top of the world feeling

The world below looks really small and the vastness of the great Himalayas can be sense huddled up inside the small and cozy cable car. It's thrilling and adventurous to ride in one.

Awesome cable car, mesmerising greenery

It was worth a visit. It drives very slow so need not worry other than the technical part. The view from the cable car was awesome! The green lushes, the green velvet covered mountains far off was fabulous. Though the waterfalls were not visible but the sound of the fall from the covered greenery made us mesmerized. Camera is a must. Any type of shoes can be used depend on ones comfortability.
