Chikmagalur was our second stop in the trip from Pune to Madikeri on our bikes We chose this hotel after going through a couple of reviews on various travel sites. The reviews we went through did not give us a very clear picture about the hotel The pictures put up on the travel sites do not do justice. The Hotel looks better than it seems in the pictures They have very good and safe parking for 2 and 4 wheelers. We felt safe to park our quite pricey bikes there. The rooms are decent with adequate amenities, but for what you are paying for the place, you are definitely getting a good deal at such a location Only problem with it is, that it lacks kitchen [hence only 6 out of 7] and the food has to be brought from outside. The staff is quite good and were very helpful in getting us good dinner from nearby restaurant We happened to meet the owner of SK Regency, Ali, a very enthusiastic guy, the next day in the morning. He asked us about our trip, the road and also gave us tips on the route we were to take. He also recommended a good breakfast place nearby called Food Palace, where we had the best breakfast in the entire 7 day long trip In all the experience was quite pleasant.
It has been a pleasant experience staying in S K Regency, Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka It's a budget hotel. The room was spacious enough to accommodate four of us (Two elders and two kids). Very good double bed easily accommodated three of us. An extra bed was required which was provided free of cost The staff was very courteous and friendly. Water bottles were complementary. Morning coffee/tea were also provided with no charge. Car washing was complementary too Chikkamagaluru is a land not only of coffee plantations but also of high peaks of the Western Ghats. The staff provided us with a local map and guided us to plan our itinerary S K Regency is ideal for people travelling with not so fat purse. It's very economical and provides services that you can think of. It has no restaurant or bar attached but they are there in the vicinity Overall it was a pleasant stay and good value for the money spent.
This was a 3 days visit & we started from Dandeli. It took 5 hours from to reach there & surprisingly Dandeli Anshi Kulgi Nature Camp was nowhere in HolidayIQ / TripAdvisor & we got the cottages amongst deep and vast forest. We enjoyed Kali river boating at Bison Resort and wildlife safari at 4pm. However, not many animals were visible other than some deer ( much leeser than Nagerhole) & some hornbills, a few bisons. Even elephant sighted was next to nil at 1200/- / cottage, it was a value for money. We got dinner at 100/- per . . Next morning we started off headed towards Yellapur. Shirley falls was 22km off & alas! An experience worse than Bengal / Jharkhand / Chhattisgarh. I 've never seen so bad roads in Karnataka and we failed to reach destn but wasted 2 hrs. So, next destn was Jog Falls. It was a renovated, newly built entrance from SH. A breathtaking view, but last year 15Aug15 the amongst torrential rain was far better. Yes, crowd was much thinner this time. Gaganachukki / Shivanasamudra falls is sparsely visited but worth seeing, near Mysore, off kanakpura Road We had lunch under scintillating heat at RNS, Murudeshwar beach & proceeded for Mani pal. Malpe beach, with fresh fish items cooked ashore, looked much similar to Colaba, albeit with much lower crowd. We had a relishing journey to Mangalore via 2*2 NH. Mangalore is calm and quiet, without jams. And, Ocean Pearl gave us around 50% discount. Slim ladies & guys at front desk & housekeeping were too hospitable. Good Lucknow-Delhi Nawabi dinner we had at Sagar Ratna ( they have a Delhi outlet, I dined there in 2001 at Lodhi Hotel). Breakfast was not too sumptuous We reached Chikmagalur late next day after visiting Karkala, Dharmasthala & Moodabidri & as adrenaline went high, I had a lunatic romanticism to cross over to C'galur via Kudremukh--Agumbe ghat & it was raining cats and dogs. Our Nerves were almost off when our driver, amongst very low visibility, was taking hair pin bends and turns sharper still. But we breathed deep sigh after the Bhadra reserve forest was over before dusk The zig zag serpentine road took us through coffee gardens to the ultimate destination by 920pm This was our second Chikmagalur visit. 2 years back, in July we stayed in Serai, an abode of ultimate luxury. Because I got 60% discount. This time, the choice was a value for money hotel. They did not check my credential at reception & so much they trusted us that for sale Coffee packets were kept on reception counter. They gave us V card of a local home delivery north Indian tandoori restaurant, who served us with a sumptuous tandoori platter at reasonable cost. The hotel arranged for utensils. We got the AC deluxe room at 50% through Goibibo & for 1250/- it was damn cheap. The reason for rating so was our lack of high expectation from this hotel. There was no doorbell & for long, especially next morning, any bellboy/ attender / housekeeper / receptionist was there, but luckily we got morning tea at due time. And we checked out keeping room key at reception, finding nobody there Mullayanagiri & Ayyanakere are the best, misty outfits & Mullayanagiri is at the top of Karnataka, hardly visible & require very competent drivers. The views were just splendid, fascinating, out of the world & relieving of all tiredness.
It was beginning of August monsoon trekking. Not able to manage time for facing monsoon and clouds. Few days back my wife suggested for Mulyanagiri near to Bangalore and easy trip within a day or two. Kind of trip where just feel the monsoon in moderate way (not like Kerala) we just booked ticket then stay. It was SK REGENCY in Chikmagalur convenient and 900m from bus stand. Some moderate hotel to just stay for freshening and sleeping, because most of the time I planned for outing roaming and drenching in moderate rain . . This hotel was good worth money and amenities prime location easily spottable on Ratnagiri road. Few average hotels near by or in main road itself. Hotel staff is very good in language, behaviour and response. Though hotel RESTAURANT was under renovation hotel manager managed us tea/coffee free of cost and for dinner we decided to go out and hunt some good restaurant there are plenty on main road As on such a quick trip we spent most of the time outside with nature and roaming around this was good choice and recommended hotel for such trips. No need of amenities and luxuries which anyhow you won't be using It was good two days staying there.
The foremost thing is the staff were courteous, the hotel ambience is good, rooms are quite big, spacious and tidy. The hotel is very centrally located accessible to various shopping streets, restaurants, and govt bus stand. The major disadvantage is the neighbor hood building, where water flowing noise was frequently disturbing during night. Some thing has to be done by the hoteliers about this so that the lodgers, mainly tourists who would be tired by doing the whole day sight seeing can sleep peacefully. Further, the hotel doesn't have the restaurant facility, the lone service boy has to bring food from near by restaurant, this has to be attended to. We felt pity for that boy and we walked the short distance may be 100 m or so to the restaurant to have coffee (especially we are used to early morning coffee (so to say early morning oops it was at 6. 30 am). At least hotel must have a coffee and snack bar attached with it for early morning service. If they provide the service of break fast and tea in the morning, included in the cost of the room would make the hotel a better one. In spite of this draw back the stay was very comfortable, because of the ever smiling staff who are eager to help you out with any thing you ask for . . Chickamagalur is surrounded by various archaeological marvells, (many hoysala temples, belur, halebid, belavadi, javagal, and the Karnataka's highest mountain peak, The mullayana giri. ( The journey to the hill on a four wheeler itself is exciting and tests the drivers skill. The famous kemmanna gundi hill station, the manikyadhara falls, the hebbe falls, Baba budangiri, the veerabadreshwara temple falls( the name of the fall I have forgotten, where in one has to wade through the falls to reach the temple). The city of hills and the miles and miles of bountiful scenic coffee estate are all eye catchers. The weather is quite cool and entire city is like an air conditioned one, you don't need AC rooms but in extreme winters, you may need a room heater, The district is a marvellous tourist spot, but really a not much explored one. To cover all these, one need to stay at least 3 days in Chickmagalur for complete rejuvenation from the hustle bustle of city life.
