Saligao is popular for an ancient Parish Church built in the Gothic style and is located 15.7 km away from Miramar. The site was originally known as Salgaon and was renamed as Saliago by the Portuguese.

The name of the village is a combination of two words, Sal and Gao, meaning wooded forest and village, respectively. Pilerne, Guirim, Candolim and Sangolda are some of the villages located close to Saligao.
