San Thome Basilica Overview

Ranked 9 of 516 sightseeing in Chennai

San thome Cathedral is a Roman Catholic minor basilica in Santhome, at Mylapore in South Chennai. Santhome Cathedral is a popular religious centre. It is believed that Santhome Cathedral was originally constructed by St. Thomas, the Father of Indian Christianity, when he was in South India between 52 AD and 72 AD, before he was martyred. The present shrine is built over the tomb of St. Thomas.

Santhome Cathedral was refurbished as a Roman Catholic Church in the 16th century by Portuguese navigators. It was rebuilt by the British in 1893, giving it the status of a Cathedral. It was built in the Neo-Gothic style of architecture, which is typical of the late 19th century. Today, Santhome Cathedral is considered among the national shrines of India.

Santhome Cathedral is about 155 feet high with a nave 112 feet long and 33 feet wide. The tip of the cross on the spire is at an elevation of 164 feet. The sanctum is about 62 feet long and 33 feet wide and is decorated with stained glass windows.

The images of St. Thomas and other Apostles can be seen on these glass windows. There is a statue of St. Thomas in a sitting posture inside the sanctum sanctorum. The central hall has 14 wooden plaques with intricate carvings depicting the last days of Jesus Christ.

The Museum cum Theatre and the Tomb Chapel are the other features of Santhome Cathedral. The Tomb Chapel lies on the right side of the cathedral and it has a separate access for visitors. The Museum in the cathedral exhibits artefacts related to St. Thomas and the Basilica. A short film documenting the life of St. Thomas is shown at the Theatre.

Must visit in Chennai

I had been to San Thome Basilica, Mylapore a couple of times, everytime it gives me a unique feeling. The National Shrine of St. Thomas Basilica is built over the tomb of Apostle St. Thomas one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ who came to India in A. D. 52, martyred in A. D. 72 and buried there. The church was designed in Neo-Gothic style by British (first by Portuguese) and is situated very near to the Beach. The church includes a very big hall, a museum and the tomb church. It is a great place to pray and meditate.

Very old and beautiful Church

One of the three churches in the world where the church is built on the tomb of an apostle (Jesus has 12 apostle), the other two churches being in Vatican and Spain. The church itself is with a magnificent architecture. The tomb of St Thomas is behind the main church in basement. Security and guides are decent plus there are a lot of information boards to make it simple and clear.

Discovered By The Group Of Nestorian Christians.

Basilica Of San Thome, was discovered by the Nestorian Christian group from Iran, as they discovered the burial site and built a church and Tomb. As Portuguese, are following the Saints, and established the Basilica. The present Basilica San Thome, was rebuilt in an impressive Gothic Style structure in 1898. It has an ornate interior with magnificent stained glass windows and a tower. This is just considered a pilgrimage for Christians, and having a great attractions for the visitors, as this is situated in Mylapore.

One of Christianity's Holiest shrines is in Chennai

Not many people know that Saint Thomas ( the original 12 apostles of Jesus Christ also the saint from whom the word "Doubting Thomas" originated) is buried in The St Thome Basilica in Chennai. This makes this place a must visit place when one is in Chennai. I have stunned many of my European and American clients who were not aware of this. This basilica also has a small museum which showcases the so called miracles done by St Thomas. It also shows the history of The City of Chennai. This basilica which was re built and redone a few times is also a beautiful building outside and inside.
