Sandakphu Overview

Ranked 6 of 77 sightseeing in Darjeeling

To be closer to the Gods in heaven is what most people aspire for and a trip to Sandakphu almost grants this wish. A peak at 11,941 feet in the Singalila Ridge, it is on the border of the National Park nestling between West Bengal and Nepal. One can get a view of some of the world’s highest peaks from this summit – the Mount Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, and Kanchenjunga, which is also known as the sleeping Buddha or Shiva.

This picturesque snow-capped land is a trekker’s paradise where flora and fauna take one's breath away with their ethereal beauty. To remove one’s self from the beauty of nature and walk on is not easy and there is an inner longing to stand still and relish paradise on earth.

Warm clothes are a mandatory requirement with temperatures vacillating between +15°C in the pleasant summers and -20°C in the icy winters. For snow enthusiasts, a late December snowfall continues into February.

Reaching here is fairly easy from Darjeeling and takes less than 4 to 5 hours. For the fitness freak, even a trek is possible. Trekker’s huts are available for rent on the way and these are well-maintained and clean. Stopping for a tea break or a view of the mountains gives one a welcome break. It is advisable to carry drinking water and snacks to eat.

The highest point of West Bengal.

Sandakphu is a small village located in the top of the Darjeeling Himalayas, the highest place of West Bengal and the highest peak of Singalila ridge. It is a popular trekking destination of West Bengal. We started our trekking from Manebhanjan, the base camp of Sandakphu. It is an awesome trekking route, full with scenic beauty and different landscapes goes all along the singalila range.Trekking route:Day 1- Manebhanjan - Chitre - Lamaydhura - Meghma - Tonglu (in India) or Tum ling (in Nepal)Day 2- Tum ling - Jhaubari - Gairibas - Kayakatta - Kalipokhri.Day 3- Kalipokhri - Bikheybhanjang - SandakphuFrom Sandakphu you have two choices. One is returning by the same route and another one is further a day treak to Phalut and returning via Rimbik. The best attraction of Sandakphu is a uninterrupted view of four of the five highest peaks of the World. E. G. Mt. Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Lhotse.

A memorable walk

Sandakphu is a wonderland for the trekkers. It's located at an altitude of 11929 ft (ie, 3636 meters) in Darjeeling district and on the north west of Darjeeling hill town. This is the summit or the highest point in Singalila range, and is also the highest peak in the state of West Bengal, India. The trek to Sandakphu goes all along the Singalila range. Sandakphu is the place from where you get a 180 degree panoramic view of some of the highest and most beautiful peaks of the world. Some of the greatest peaks that can be seen from here include the Mt Everest, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Pandim, Three Sisters, Kumbhakarna, etc. The trek route to Sandakphu and beyond to Phalut starts from a place called Manebhanjan, a small village located at an altitude of 7054 ft (2150 m). This is virtually the gateway to Singalila and Sandakphu. From Manebhanjan the distance up to Sandakphu is 32 km. Though it has got a motorable road (only for hired Land Rovers), but the scenic beauty can only be cherished while trekking through the woods and villages. The trek route passes through the Singalila National Park all the way to the summit. There are a few routes to reach Sandakphu, we followed the following trail: Manebhanjang - Tumbling - Kalipokhri - Sandakphu - Srikhola - Rimbik. It took us, 6 days and 5 nights to complete the trek. All these villages have provision for home stay, other than the stay at Sandakphu all other places were relatively cheap. A guide is mandatory and can be hired @ INR 500/ day from Maneybhanjang. Forest passes are also to be made from Maneybhanjang or Chitrey. From Sandakphu, one can trek further up to Phalut which is another 21 km away. It takes an additional day of trek from Sandakphu on a relatively easy terrain. In our case, due to heavy snowfall the road got closed and we had to return back from Sandakphu. But, we were lucky enough to witness the season's first snowfall, that too in front of the mighty Himalayas.

Best sightseeing place ever had

Full paisa vasool. I visited most of the place by walk everything is very good there. You must carry warm cloths, shoes and camera. Tiger Hill must visit. All the spot in Darjeeling is very good. Nepali thali veg, non-veg item everything is available very easily. Don't waste your time to see movies in Darjeeling only walk in cloud and enjoy Toy Train.

oldest trek route of India-Sandakphu

A trek through the oldest trek route of India-Sandakphu!From the lush green meadows to the dense jungles which leads to the snow laden summit. It would be unfair to categorise Sandakphu as a sightseeing destination because it's surely more than that. The trek route of Sandakphu is a paradise. The snowfall had some kind of uniqueness to it. The snowflakes were swiftly dancing their way down and had this unpredictable pattern in their movement. This place was amazingly serene. A place where you can draw your imaginations by absorbing the long silence and letting your imaginations set sail.So throw off your Bowlines, Sail away from the Safe harbour and catch the Trade winds in your sails.Explore Sandakphu!!

A place where you can see the Milky Way Galaxy with naked eyes

There still exist places in India which is arguably more beautiful than alps viewed from Switzerland. I bet my eyes, every person, who went there once, will go there again if he gets a chance. The attitude of the locals are so polite, unbelievably breathtaking sights, scary roads and what not. I am in love with this place and will go there again and again if I am lucky enough.
