Ranked 22 of 769 sightseeing in Mumbai

Sanjay Gandhi National Park, earlier known as the Borivali National Park, lies near northern suburban Mumbai. The total area covered by this park is 104 sq. km, which encompasses Kanheri caves to the centre that were built between 2nd and 9th centuries. Besides, the park also has two lakes, namely Tulsi Lake and Vihar Lake, the deer park, the lion safari and the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi.

Characteristic of rich flora and fauna, the park is a delight for tree lovers as well as animal lovers. Being the nesting ground for a number of birds, it is also considered to be a bird watcher’s paradise. The park further provides a beautiful view of the hills, valleys, lakes and open spaces. Various school and college picnics are also conducted here.

Tourists can reach the park by means of road transport, comprising buses that ply from the city to the park daily, taxis or auto rickshaws. Just 2 km from the park is the Borivali station; hence, tourists can also opt to board a train.

Monsoon trek at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Thane

It was Saturday rainy morning we decided to explore the Sanjay Gandhi National Park at Thane end. It is advisable to start early at around 7 am. The entrance to the park is near Tiki ji ni Wadi, an amusement park in Thane West. There is entry fee of Rs 53 per head charged by the Forest Department just at the entrance. It is a small climb to the peak of one of the mountain which lies within the park. Not to forget to carry water bottle and eatables as there are no eateries available. Importantly, do not litter and help in keeping the premises free of garbage. There is nature's trail to be followed which leads to the summit. Enroute, one can enjoy the scenic view of green jungle, ponds and small waterfalls during monsoon. Relatively it is easier trek requiring 2 to 3 hours to complete. There are other routes which one can explore too. If you are looking for small break from the routine life then this place could offer such break.

Green Lungs of mega city Mumbai.

The only big green forested park of Mumbai, also known as city's green lungs, is situated in Borivali east. It covered an almost 100 sq km of lush green forest, seasonal rivers and waterfalls, the historic Kenhari caves, the Tiger and Lion safari park and a mini railway circuit. It's a big draw for locals and visitors alike. There is entry fee of Rs 44/ person plus Rs 146 if entering with your car. Many nature trails within the forests are preferred by adventure seekers, and many walk the approx. 9 km, along the only road, through forest to reach Kenhari caves, though buses do operate in this sector. One can drive right up to the footsteps of the caves too.For children, watching monkeys and deers is an adventure plus a ride on the mini train Van Rani is thrilling.Special buses take visitors through the Tiger and Lion safari parks where this wild life can be seen from close distances.Overall, it's a very nice, inviting, relaxing and adventure seekers.

Great visit with varied flora and fauna

This National Park is one of the best place for wildlife and nature lovers. The safari that they offer is worth taking. The best time to visit is rainy season with lots of variety of birds and flowers that make the visit memorable. You are lucky if you get to see a White Tiger...!!!

National Park in Mumbai

This National Park has very low fee for entry. It can be explored by walking if you want an adventurous trip. You can also rent a bicycle. There are mini trains and bus for animal safari. Deers and Monkeys can be found roaming on the streets. It's a great place for bird watchers and photographers and also for nature enthusiasts. You can also go to the caves.Note: You have to walk 7 kms so I prefer taking a bike or your own car inside. And best season to visit is in Monsoon.

A green place between the polluted city

The best part of this park is the Kanheri Caves. This place is not far away from the city and is well-connected by road and rail. The safari is not that good. The toy train is always good.

Good for picnic, not many animals to see

It's a huge park, over a period of times number of animals have come down due to poor maintenance. Tiger safari was available till last 6 month's don't know the current status. Good spot for picnic and one can see cave's also inside.
