Sargaalaya International Arts and crafts museums

After day 3, luxury hotel stay in the Raviz hotel at kozhikode we Started our journey to sargaalaya International Arts and crafts museums. The first impression after reaching the place was, why God has given every thing here only. But frankly speaking when we met CEO of the museum, we were amazed to see how they are handling poor artisans and their art which is gonna die, if not trained to newer generation. But these local are not so rich that they can go to city and sell their products, so this museum is giving these artists and artisans to market their products to tourists who comes and buy some stuff for them.Let me take you to history of this museum. There are around 107 artisans who are working and making handicrafts for museums to sell under museums. They get their salary or stipend. They train widows or poor lady who is also bread runner of family. This is a real craft village, where 240 women work day and night so that they can make their own handicrafts and sell in markets during exhibition. The exhibition is on from 10 am to 6 pm.

      Sargaalaya Arts and crafts village

India's best museum which is responsible tourism under state government of Kerala, they are trying to save dying art by teaching the new generation the traditional technique of handicrafts. We met world best artisan who makes mat with traditional machines. We also met Mr. Arun who can't speak but has been awarded as best artisan for Clay portrait, he has made more than 2000 design in his life. We also met students who are trying to save this art from local village. The museum is doing a great job by giving platform to seek their products in their museum. A must visit for every traveler and handicraft lover.

Bamboo Craft Art at Sargaalaya Center Kerala

Kerala has bamboo and cane which are major ingredients along with timber which traditionally employs basic woven craft skills on a larger scale. It was actually the weaving of bamboo splits or flattened bamboo that finds application in various ways, causing this unique extension of the craft form. The Kerala Tourism at Sargaalaya art and crafts village has made ideal use of bamboo and it's durability to help the local tribals and underprivileged make a living by learning a skill in order to survive.Fine detailing and varied intricate weaves are the hallmarks of the traditional bamboo and cane basketry of this region which the Kerala government has enforced.Bamboo and cane are major ingredients along with timberwhich traditionally employs basic woven craft skills albeit on a larger scale. Fun day at the Arts and Crafts Centre

This place is huge and are expanding too. To visit this small handicraft village, you need half a day atleast because its almost 6-hour tour. There are numerous rooms which has different types of handicraft for eg: Wood carving, Jute work, Hand-looms, aquarium, wooden toy store, south Indian sari store. and other varieties of handmade eco-friendly products. The place has a shopping area, Canteen, ATM, Sitting area, outdoor theatre and ample parking. At their canteen we were served a delicious Sadhya for lunch. Food was delicious and good quality with payasam at the end which was delicious. The entry ticket is Rupee 30 for all. In brief, this place is best for kids educational visit and quick local handicraft shopping. I have been informed by the staff, there is an international event taking place for handicrafts and culture taking place in Dec 2017. I would recommend vising at that time.

A Visit to the Arts and Crafts Centre

Iringal, a quaint little village near Vadakara in Kozhikode has a special place in the history of Kerala. You get to experience and enjoy the unrivalled skills of the traditional craftsmen of Kerala as well as all over India. Sargaalaya Kerala Arts and Crafts village is an initiative of the Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala. It is an exclusive place where you can not only pick a product fashioned by the traditional artisans of Kerala but also learn one or two lessons in the subtleties of crafts-making. Conceptualized as a tourist destination, Sargaalaya was developed and implemented on the Responsible Tourism model. We got a chance to try our hands at Clay pottery and also met 74yr old Artist Mr. Ayyappan who was nominated for the National Award. We even bought some stoles built by him!
