Savitri Temple Overview

Ranked 2 of 13 sightseeing in Pushkar

Situated on the peak of the Ratnagiri Hill, the Savitri Temple is dedicated to Savitri, Lord Brahma’s consort. It was built in 1687 and pilgrims need to trek up the hill in order to reach the shrine of the temple. The temple houses the statue of Goddess Savitri and offers good views of the surroundings, including the sand dunes of nearby villages and of the Pushkar Lake.

Legend has it that the presence of Savitri was required in a ‘yagna’ that was done by Lord Brahma but she kept Him waiting. Lord Brahma irritated with her behaviour, married a milkmaid named Gayatri. Savitri became furious at this and cursed Him that he will only be worshipped once a year and only in Pushkar.

The temple on Hilltop

Savitri temple is situated on top of Aravali Hill. It gives the best aerial view of Pushkar town. The temple is not open during the whole day, there are certain time of its opening, so better confirming it in advance with locals. The temple is on hilltop and one can walk to top or can go up by cable car. To reach this temple do take rickshaw as it is bit off to the town, not much around 3 4 kilometers.

Savitri temple

Savitri temple is located atop the Savitri Hill. The one and half hour climb to the temple is hard and strenuous. Both, idols of Brahma's first wife Savitri and his second consort Gayatri are present here, though Savitri is always worshipped first.

A temple on the top of the mountain

There are lot of temples in Pushkar and this temple is situated on the top of a mountain. There is a ropeway system to go up and come down, the cost being Rs. 92/head for 2-way journey. We climbed up by rope-way and preferred coming down by steps. The view of the Pushkar town including the lake and all its 52 ghats, from the top is awesome. Try to see the sunset from the mountain. The temple is closed in noon time for 2 hours, but still the rope way service was going on.

Tough walk up the hill but worth the view

Savitri Mata Mandir is built on the top of the hill and it's a tough climb. Not for pregnant and old people. There are stairs in the beginning but after some distance it's all rock cut stairs. Climb is steep. View worth the hard walk.

The trek to this temple is totally worth it

After a tiring trek, you get to this temple. It's a small place, but once you have done the trek, you will be so happy to see this temple. There is a small point inside the temple, where you can just sit and relax, see the life go on down the mountain. You can even go further above on the mountain, which is an awesome experience.
