Shalimar Gardens Overview

Ranked 11 of 53 sightseeing in Srinagar

Shalimar Bagh is one of the beautiful gardens in Srinagar, which is regarded as the monument of love. It was built in 1616 by Mughal Emperor Jahangir for his wife, Nur Jahan. This garden houses four terraces, fountains and a canal. The highest terrace at this site is known as 'Abode of Love', which was used by the emperor and royal ladies. This bagh is also called as Garden of Char Minar, Faiz Baksh and Farah Baksh.

It has been constructed as per the layout of the famous Chahar Bagh in Persia. This bagh covers an area of approximately 31 acres and is surrounded by chinar trees. It is also linked with the water of Dal Lake through a canal, measuring 1.6 km in length. Shalimar Bagh is situated at a distance of 15 km from Srinagar and around 25 km from the nearest airport in Badgam District.

It is further 300 km from the closest railhead in Jammu and is connected by road with both Jammu and Srinagar.

Fountains & Flowers

Lots and lots of fountains. Variety of flowers. Although architecture of Shalimar and Nishat gardens looks similar, they differ when looked in detail. Entry fee 20INR per head.

Very well built and maintained garden

Shalimar Garden is very beautiful, well built and maintained garden. Water fountains and in between rock pathway is great. A small room surrounded by small water stream is beautiful. Yellow leaves tree is also very attractive in Shalimar Garden.

Nice and big garden

Nice big garden specially visit time of summer. April to June is the best time to visit any gardens in Srinagar. All garden are situated near to Dal Lake, stay away if anyone giving a flower or ask your camera for photo clicking then they'll ask for bakshish. Nothing is free in entire Kashmir, you have to pay for every help taken.

Awesome Mughal splendor

One of the spectacular Mughal gardens of Srinagar, this one is smaller than Nishat garden but is a must visit. It houses the 400 years old Chinar tree! Also has promenades and waterways creating a beautiful ambience!
