Sharadamba Temple Overview

Ranked 6 of 64 sightseeing in Chikmagalur

Sharadamba Temple, constructed in the modern Dravidian style of architecture, is one of the most popular worship places of the Chikmagalur district. The temple features gopuram at the entrance along with broad covered pavement for pradakshina. It is dedicated to the Goddess Sharada Parameswari, Goddess of Knowledge and houses a deity image.

The temple is believed to be built during Adi Shankaracharya's period. It is believed that it had a deity image of the goddess at that time made out of sandalwood. The sandalwood statue was replaced by a stone and gold image in the 14th century by Vidyaranya. The temple structure was made of wood till the early 20th century, before fire broke and damaged the ancient structure. The present structure is built in the traditional south Indian style.

Tourists can witness beautiful image of the Goddess, while entering the temple from the gopuram. The Goddess at Garbhagriha, made of polished granite, is seated on the Sriyantra on a golden throne. A capacious hall supported by pillars with beautiful carvings lies in front of the sanctum.

One of the highlights of temple is Vyakhyana Simhasanam, representing Sarvajna Peetha, seat of transcendental wisdom. The Acharyas ride the throne on various occasions like taking charge at the Mutt and the ceremonial events of Navaratri.

Temple looks great with fog covered, awesome stone carved mathas outside

I went yesterday early morning. It was a miracle that I reached this temple without my will. I am dental doctor from Kundapur so had AKDDA meeting at Kudremukh. But when I reached at Kudremukh National park I got a call that I had to come to Kemmangundi not Kudremukh. Oops to tell them that I am struck in between, network was not there. I was told another 160 kms from Sringeri.I thought of deciding whether to go or not, first time I was travelling to these parts I had to pass through dense forest of Kudremukh National Park, oh my god I think there were 50 plus curves, uphill and narrow. I had my heart in my mouth but it was a great experience. After reaching Sringeri I decided to halt there and go back Kundapur next day. I didn't go inside temple that day as it was already late. I took a lodge that was very horrible no power till morning, still managed. I was bit worried about car parking because they took 20 rupees for car parking and told we're not responsible if car is stolen. I told Jai Shardambe and parked my car and went towards lodge.Early morning in the empty road Sharadamba Temple was looking great. As soon as I entered inside the view was excellent in fog. Goddess Shardambe was looking very beautiful in golden saree. Well the prasada and all pooja receipts will commence from 730 am. So I prayed to god and left there. Outside the temple the stone carved mathas were simply awesome to look. River next to it covered with fog was nice to watch, took few snaps and went to parking lot and there I was happy to see fog covered my car safely there. Sringeri is a beautiful temple in Chikmagalur dist. Please go with your family here do not go alone here.

Shringery sharadamba

The goddess of knowledge, and the wife of Lord Brahma divinely seated on a tunga river side in a well crafted beautiful and spacious temple. The temple is managed by Shringeri mutt. ( the decedents of Adi guru shankara charya). Cool weather, food ( the prasadam) served in temple are the feast with complete care given to hygiene and cleanliness, with well maintained dining hall and water and bathroom facility. The fish in the river are marvelous to watch not both children and adults alike.
