Kanha National Park is not exactly easy to get to, but for the wildlife enthusiast, has that ever really been a deterrent? If anything, the fact that it is slightly harder to get to, made us more enthusiastic - happy as we were that fewer people would get there The Indian safari experience can be somewhat under-whelming, packed as one is into a 'tourist bus' with bawling babies and noisome cries of 'dekho, dekho, sher! '. Shergarh camp at Kanha ensured that our safari experience was worlds away from this spectacle. Credit goes of course also to the authorities at Kanha for ensuring a limit on the number of jeeps entering the national park at any one time, but the folks at Shergarh take it up one notch by making the wildlife holiday about so much more than a ride into the jungle First, for those who like their creature comforts even when in the wild - you need have no worries. The 'tents' at Kanha have all the appearance of tents, with the comfort of a good hotel room. Of course, you don't have television, cell phone connectivity is minimal, and power cuts can happen, but who needs those when you are being serenaded by the morning calls of birds and can look out of your window to see if a jungle cat is passing by? All the tents have comfortable ensuite bathrooms and very comfortable beds that you can sink into The best part is that the folks at Shergarh organize excursions into the surrounding countryside - if you have the time, don't miss walks with their naturalists, or gentle climbs into the sloping terrain nearby. Evenings are all about meeting your fellow guests over a campfire and sharing stories of who saw what that day. The food is wholesome and delicious, although perhaps slightly biased towards a Continental selection for part of the meals. (They will arrange something a little more Indian, if you need it). The property itself is beautiful, with a calm, small lake and a walkway over it - the stuff dreams are made of. Go definitely, if the idea of getting away from it all appeals to you, and you want a holistic wildlife experience, not just a ride in a jeep to see a tiger. (We did see a tiger, but the holiday as a whole was so delightful that it ended up being just one of the many high points! ). P. S. If your party has people in it who are not very into the outdoors, you may want to take along some indoor games or other such activities. But, Kanha is really about the outdoors!
