Sim's Park Overview

Ranked 1 of 11 sightseeing in Coonoor

Sim's Park is an unusual park-cum-botanical garden, which was laid more than a hundred years ago on the natural hill ranges. The garden features ethnic trees along with shrubs and creepers which co-habit with various other trees brought from thought the world.

The park is named after Mr. J.D. Sim, former Secretary to Government, and Major Murray, a pioneer whose efforts helped to set up garden in 1874. The site is positioned in the north side of Coonoor railway station, at an altitude of 1,770 m above sea level. Sprawling over an area of 12 hectares, the garden occupies the inclined area and base of a ravine.

Highlights of the garden are Queensland Karry Pine, Rudraksha (the bead tree) and Handsome Ornamental tree. Sim’s park along with Botanical Garden has the largest repository of temperate plants in India. Due to this fact, Sim's Park is a destination of significance for botanists.

The garden also hosts an annual vegetable and fruit show that showcases various exotic species of systematic and economic significance. It links with the well known institutions like Pomological Station, Pasteur Institute and Silk Worm Seed Station. Beautiful gardens featuring flowering plants or shrub grab attention of the tourists.

Tranquil Oasis

This little piece of greenery in the centre of town will help you unwind and relax in the lap of nature. Some very old trees from all over the world have been collected and can be seen here - easily an exciting place for any botanist. The blooming flowers give an added colour to the greenery.A must visit if you have some time to be with nature when you visit Coonoor.

A Good place to visit in Coonoor

We walk along the countryside from High filed tea garden to Sim's park ( 75KM). This was a excellent walk, calm and in the nature. Inside the sim's park: This place is very well maintained, with lots of flower garden and varieties of flowers. Few open park here and there for people to relax. A small boat house. OVerall a good place to visit and relax for few hours in the afternoon.

Nice place to visit for nature lovers

Coonoor Botanical Garden is much better maintained and much better place to visit then the Ooty botanical garden. The ticket to enter the place is 30 Rs per person and place is on the hill. So, when you enter the garden you start going downhill and at the bottom of the hill is a small lake. However, to come back you will have to climb up the hill which can be very tiring on a normal hot day. Garden has good variety of normal hill flowers and big trees. It is beautiful and a nice place to relax.

Nice place to relax amid nature

It is a nice place to relax. Full of greenery and rare plants. A must see place for nature lovers. No food is available inside the park but one can buy and carry food items from outside. There's a small boating place to enjoy by paying 50 rupees per person for 10 mins ride. A children play area is also there but that is not well-maintained.

A century old repository to cherish

Sim's Park in Coonoor is a good example of a visionary and monumental effort to preserve and present the botanical wealth to generations after. Right from the entrance we were engulfed by the aura of profoundness and tenacity of life and for the rest of two hours we were led by the same sensation, till we felt weak and lost in front of the mighty trees smiling at us in glory. What a completely engaging experience!!!!!! Please do not see this place an item in your itinerary, but one to absorb the enormity and to reflect. You will cherish the memory for a long time.
