Sri Kamakshi Amman Temple Overview

Ranked 3 of 25 sightseeing in Kanchipuram

Sri Kamakshi Amman Temple is dedicated to Kamakshi, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. Within the ‘Gayatri Mandapam,’ the sanctum is situated below the gold-plated vimana and is supported by 24 pillars that coordinate with the 24 words of the ‘Gayatri Mantra’.

The deity of the temple is postured to hold a staff, noose, sugarcane bow and flower arrows in her hands. A shrine of the temple is dedicated to Adi Sankaracharya, who placed a chakra before the deity.

A mango tree is situated outside the main temple and this is considered to be the place where Kamakshi worshipped a Shivalingam that was made of sand and gained Lord Shiva’s hand in marriage.

In the month of February or March, the famous annual Car Festival is held at this site. During this car festival, the Goddess is taken out on a procession throughout the town.

Goddess Shakti Is Worshiped

Goddess Shakti Or Goddess Parvati is worshiped in three major cities out of which, this ancient city ranks first in importance. The gold plated main tower and the golden chariot are the temple special features. The sculptures of the 7th century temple are awe-inspiring. This huge temple is constructed in around 5 acres of land. The Adi Shankaracharya's life history is displayed in a gallery of the Temple.

Pious temple with the blessings of Kamakshi

It is a big temple with good view. This temple is very pious with the blessings of Kamakshi and is protected by the Kanchi mutt. This temple has Abhishekam being performed number of times in a day and at times, it takes an hour. Try completing the rest of the temples and then reach this temple for worshipping.

A darshan to remember

A good and calm atmosphere to move in side the temple, no wastage of time. The movement was normal with no untoward situation faced during darsan. If you would like to have darsan of Sri Kamakshi for a good amount of time, take the left hand direction before entering the sanctum. After passing few steps up you will be facing the Goddess about 15 to 20 ft distance. After that you can enter the other way by normal routine path and again have the darsan of the Goddess. Thereafter, roam around the temple to witness the pond, four Gopurams, an old tree with hundreds of cradle toys tied for aspiring mother hood, Try to purchase "Sri Chakra" idol to be placed in Pooja room. Get the blessings of the Gajaraja (elephant ) in front of the queu lines.

The abhishekam was really worth it

We booked against payment for abhishekam in the temple for 11 AM and we reached there. We also had to a buy ticket for submitting a Sari for Goddess Kamakshi. The abhishekam was really providing peace to our minds and we watched the entire abhishekam with full devotion and received the prasadam before returning to the hotel to have lunch and packed back to Chennai.
