Sri Rangam Temple Overview

Ranked 11 of 29 sightseeing in Trichy

Sri Rangam Temple, believed to be the first Vaishnava temples in South India, is situated at Trichy. Considered as one of the prominent temples among the 108 Vaishnava divya desams, the premises served as a headquarters of the Vaishnava movement during medieval period. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the entire Universe, the temple sprawls across an area of around 6, 31,000 sq km.

It is believed that the temple was constructed during the reign of Pallavas, who have contributed a lot in expanding the Aryan institutions in Southern India. After that, the Chola Kingdom ruled the parts of Coromandel Coast and the Eastern Deccan, where they put their efforts for spreading the Hindu culture throughout the region. The temple has also witnessed the ruling periods of Pandyas of Madurai, Hoysalas of Mysore, Europeans or East India Company, Aurangazeb and administration of the Madras Presidency.

The structure of the temple comprises seven concentric rectangular enclosures with a round sanctum, located in its centre. Being one of its kinds, the Vaishnava believers state that the seven enclosures are the reference to the seven elements, which help in making up the human body. The seventh enclosure, Rayagopuram, is unfinished and believed to be risen to a height of at least 50 m during its construction.

Comprising four gopuras is the Sixth enclosure, which presents the inscriptions dating back to 13th century characters and a wide collection of processional cars. The fifth enclosure houses the Shrine of Manavala Mamunigal, which represents the beautiful example of Chola architectural styles. Besides, the fourth enclosure comprises the Temple of Venugopala Krishnan, which houses the famous Sesharayar Mandapa towards its south. The walls of the shrine are adorned with beautiful sculptures and stone carved paintings, which have references to the holy episodes of the past.

Considered to be the most powerful part of the temple, the third enclosure leads to the Garuda Mandapa, which comprises 14 rows and a beautiful Mandapa. The enclosure also houses a sacred tank known as Chandrapushkarani, which can be reached with the flight of steps in the east and west directions. Housing broken series of mandapas, the second enclosure possesses the kitchen premises of the god, which also distributes food to the pilgrims as well as tourists.

The first and the bottom most enclosure houses a huge entry gate that is located in the southern part of the shrine. Nazhikettan Gopura houses images and stone carvings of Sankhanidhi and Padmanidhi, along with paintings and figures of many gods and goddesses. Other holy shrines located on the first enclosure are Yagasala, Tondaiman Mandapa, Arjuna Mandapa and Kili Mandapa.

Amazing and Huge Temple

I visited this temple today morning. I boarded the bus from Selvam Lodge, Tiruchirappalli which is situated at Tiruchirapalli railway station. This temple is 8 km away from the railway station. You can get the direct bus no. 1 from the station. The temple entry is a grand one, where a huge entry gate is there with various gods and goddesses carved on it. This temple is of Lord Sri Rangam ie, Lord Vishnu avatar. Here, the sleeping posture of Lord Vishnu is inside the temple. There is a huge rush in the temple on weekends so there is an entry fee of Rs. 50/- and Rs. 250/-. Due to long queue, I had to take Rs. 250/- ticket and I got great darshans in the morning. Apart for this temple, one more temple is situated inside the same premises, which is of Lord Primal. There is prasad offered in the temple which are made of Rice. Cost per plate is Rs. 20/- with 4 varieties to choose.Overall, it is a nice temple which is a must to visit if you come to Tiruchirapalli.
