Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple Overview

Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple is situated atop the Elephant or Hastigiri Hill and is dedicated to Varadaraja Perumal or Lord Vishnu. The deity is enshrined within the temple tank and is carved out of atti wood.

Once in every 40 years, the deity is brought out before the public for some 48 days. During the months of May and June, the annual Garudothsavam Festival is celebrated at this site and is attended by several people.

The temple comprises of numerous sculptures and carvings of lizards that are plated in gold and of riders on horsebacks. The most interesting feature of the temple is the twin lizards that are crafted in silver and gold and are known to annul the sins of those who touch them.

It also includes a 16th century pillared pavilion, 100-pillared hall that is carved out of monolith and ornamental rings at the four corners that are carved out of a single stone.

Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple, is also known as Hastagiri and Attiyuran, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is situated in suburbs of Kanchipuram known as Vishnu Kanchi. One of the greatest Hindu Scholar Ramanuja is believed to be resided here. This is also popularly known as Mumurtivasam means abode of trio. This is considered the most sacred place out of all Divya Desam for Vaishnavites. This temple is a great masterpiece of architecture and one feels its divines, it attracts devotees as well as tourists.

Varadharaja Perumal Temple - Most famous and leading temple in Kanchipuram

This is the most famous and leading temple of Lord Vishnu in Kanchipuram which was built by kings of Vijayanagar. The temple has a big entrance Gate. Idol of Lord Vishnu is at ground floor and as well as on first floor. There is also a Golden Lizard at ceiling. It is believed that you will be free of sin by touching same. A ladder is kept to touch Golden Lizard. There is also a temple of Goddess Padmavati ( Mahalaxmi ) in front of main temple. Some part of same temple is covered by Gold. Must visit place in Kanchipuram.

Its a huge temple

A huge temple and the deity is Lord Varadaraja, very old temple in Kancheepuram, with good work in granite inside the temple. There is Theppakulam inside the temple with good water, this one of the Vishnu temple among the important 108 Vishnu temples.
