Srikalahasti Temple Overview

Ranked 1 of 13 sightseeing in Srikalahasti

Srikalahasti temple, also known as the Srikalahastisvara Swamy temple, is a prominent temple in the Srikalahasti town of Andhra Pradesh. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is the same site where Kannappa, one of the 63 Shaivite Nayanars, was ready to offer his eyes for covering the blood flowing from the Shiva Linga. The only Vayu Deva temple in India, dedicated to the God of Wind, is also situated within the complex.

The main temple was renovated during the 12th century by Rajendra Chola, the famous Chola King. This temple has an idol of Vayu Dev and Lord Shiva who is worshipped here as Kalahasteeswara. It also has idols of Rahu and Kethu, the two out of nine grahams or celestial bodies. This temple is carved out of the side of a big stone hill and has a 120 ft high ancient gopuram.

Big and very well-maintained temple

Went for the Rahu Kethu pujas held in the temple. Overcrowded at the Rahu Kala timings. Mass pooja with lots of people performing them. The temple itself is big and very well-maintained.

Gopuja in Srikalahasti

Gopuja (donation - 50/-; Venue - at the temple entrance) performed everyday at 4am, wherein the priests perform 1 round of Gopradakshia/parikrama (circumambulation). Thereafter devotees are allowed to witness Suprabatha seva, darshan of goddess Gnana Prasunamba and darshan of Lord Shiva (Vayu Lingam). This is best hour, any day, for darshan/ visiting Sri Kalahasteeswara temple.

A commune with the Lord

The Srikalahasti temple has Vijayanagar architecture especially on its Western entrance. On the Northwestern side of temple compound is the Pathala Ganapathi. The legend has it that Agasthya perceived Ganapathi emerging from pathal after killing a demon. This point of subterranean emergence is worshipped as Pathala Ganapathi with a statue that lies about 25 feet below ground. The entrance is only 3ft high requiring crawling into a flight of steps that leads to the idol. Only batches of 10 are allowed due to space constraints. The main idol of sanctum sanctorum is a 4 feet long shiv ling standing in front of which one looses the human identity and feel the pulsing purusha inside that is one with the God in front. This oneness of advaita is what I felt and couldn't add any prayer to this pure joy. On the eastern face of sanctum dwell Shree Parvathy, the epitome of kindness and unfathomable love.Rahu Kethu pooja is done by the devotee during rahukaalam under temple guidance for which tickets are issued. The temple entry is free and camera prohibited. Best, wear a dhoti and shirt and go bare footThe most striking feeling is the upwelling of joy as you stand before the Neelkanth and remain one with him.

Marvellous temple constructed by early Chalos

This temple was constructed "early by Cholas" at that time and at time passed it was "moderately expanded" by the govt. I visited this temple with my family for pooja of "Saneeswara Naga Nivarana" which is only "performed only in this temple" in the whole world the special time to visit the temple is during "Mahashivaratri" for "special pujas to Lord Shiva" for the devotees which will be given only in that in a year. Another interesting aspect is the "annadanam scheme" in which free mid-day meals will be provided to the devotees who have done darshanam. So must visit temple during vacations at least.

Must visit temple during Maha Shivaratri

I "visited as a return from Tirupati". "Trains are available to Srikalahasti" from Tirupati so I reached temple by catching early morning train. It "took just few hours journey" to the temple from Tirupati by train". The "speciality" of the temple is for the "Rahu-Kethu Sarpa Dosha Nivarana pooja" that which will be performed only in two temples and among two one is this. The "temple architecture" is good and was "constructed by Cholas in 5th century". The other main attractions around here are "Talakona Waterfall" which is "270 feet high". I recommend everyone to visit the temple "during Maha Shivaratri" and have food at "annadanam scheme of temple" which is more tastier than outside food and have "great positive experience here".

Nice and big temple

It's such a nice and big temple, I would love it so much. But I don't know why people will less No. to this temple, even though it is having a huge and large infrastructure and it is too old i. e it is having very old history. But I like it a lot because I can watch the god clearly without rush. Thanks God for this.

Mind blowing Shiva Temple

Temple was mind blowing, I loved that holy place. I think 50kms from Tirupati. Best time is early morning. Temple is maintained well. Better to book a ticket before going because lot of people may take 4 hours for Darshan. Transportation may be difficult.

Good temple for doing Rahu Kethu Pooja

Visited the temple with my wife on persistent pressure from my mother in law to do the Rahu Kethu Pooja. There are frequent buses from Tirupati to Srikalahasti. The pooja is supposed to be done in Rahu kaal at the temple so check the calendar for the time. But it can be done at any time in that temple. The tickets for the pooja range from 300, 750, 1500, and 2500 Rs. The queue for the pooja increases as the rates go down. The pooja ticket is for one person or a couple (husband and wife). The ticket comes with a package with coconuts and other pooja items. Then you are proceeded to a hall and instructions are given by a priest or poojari on the procedures and mantras to be repeated. The whole pooja takes about 40 min and you are taken through a special queue to visit the temple. It is said that you are to leave the clothes you wear for pooja after bath there itself or at the hotel i. E at Kalahasti itself. We then went to the hotel and then checked out immediately. Good place but not much of facilities like good restaurants etc. But you can plan visiting along with Tirupati Darshan.
