Srirangapatnam Fort Overview

Ranked 7 of 18 sightseeing in Srirangapatna

Srirangapatnam Fort was built by the Feudal Lord, Kempe Gowda, in 1537. Four main entrances known as Delhi, Bangalore, Mysore, water and elephant gates welcome tourists arriving at the site. A double wall defence system makes the fort impenetrable. Since Tipu Sultan's residence was inside this fort, it is also known as Tipu Sultan Fort.

At the fort, Tipu Sultan breathed his last, while fighting the British forces in Mysore War during the 18th century. Located on an island in midst of River Cauvery, the fort is built in Indo-Islamic style. Persian inscription on the gateway that announces its date of construction is one of the highlights of the fort. In the lower chambers of the fort are located two dungeons that were used to imprison captured British officers.

On the walls of the fort, various paintings like ‘The storming of Srirangapatnam’ by Sir Robert Ker can be found. Inner entrance of the fort contains Chaturvimsati Pillars that bear carvings of 24 forms of Vishnu. A mosque and the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna, that is famous for its gopuram and thick fort-like walls are also located within the fort.

Historical interest

Though the remains of the said Fort is not much in place, but overall it reminds us of the historical importance. What we all studied during our early years. The maintenance is good, but surely can be better, considering the importance.

Feel proud in visiting

Was an awe-inspiring visit to the Srirangapatna Fort. Tipu's war technology for rockets was great to know and has been adopted by the western world. Makes one feel proud about our country. The treasures are definitely worth observing. They have several swords, paintings and other artefacts which make you feel that every Indian must visit this place atleast once in their lifetime.

A place replete with history

One can go by any vehicle inside the fort. Ranganthaswamy temple is right inside the fort. There are houses and offices. Entrance is through one of the gates and exit through another. The place where Tppu was killed is marked as soon as you enter. Beautiful bougainvilleas are there on one side. A big ground is there in front of the temple. All sorts of usual shops and eatables are there.
