Sun Temple. Overview

Ranked 1 of 2 sightseeing in Modhera

The Sun Temple at Modhera was constructed by King Bhimdev I between 1022 and 1063. It was built two centuries before the construction of the Sun Temple at Konark. The temple is counted amongst the finest structures raised by the Solanki Dynasty. Situated on a round hill, the shrine is strategically constructed in a way that during dawn the sunrays fall on the image of Surya inside the temple.

The architecture of the temple resembles the Konark Sun Temple in Orissa. The pathway leading to the main hall and inner sanctum of the temple has pillars. These pillars are adorned with carvings of birds, goddesses, beasts and blossoms. The 52 intricately carved pillars in the exterior complex of the temple depict scenes from the Ramayana, Krishna Leelas and the Mahabharata.

Having 12 recess walls, the interior hall or the main hall is kept simple and represents Surya's monthly manifestations. The spacious main hall is lined with sculptured panels and stone carved images. The temple complex portrays a fine example of the principles of Vastu Shastra, planning, engineering and astronomy.

There is a huge rectangular pond that is surrounded by the shrines of Lord Ganesha, Vishnu, Shiva and Goddess Sitala Mata. The pond is surrounded by 108 small and miniature shrines.

The temple’s main entrance is towards its west. The sanctum of the temple stands on a raised brick terrace that has been constructed using stones. A 15 m square pillared hall is accessible through a carved archway.

The Guda Mandapa houses a structure called as a surang, which is the safest route to reach Patan, the headquarters of the Solankis. The pillared hall has an inner sanctuary on its western side, along with a stepped pyramid style entrance. The upper storeys of the hall were completely destroyed by the Muslim rulers and the ruins can still be seen there.

The best way to reach the temple is through roadways, via the state transport buses and private luxury coaches that are easily available from various cities of Gujarat.

Complexity and Serenity

Early mornings are quite at the temple. The serenity helps you imagine the rituals and the preparations at the that took place every day. The still waters of the pond gives a new dimension to the complex yet thoroughly designed steps.

Surya mandir, Modhera, Ahmedabad

This is a temple dedicated to the Hindu Sun-God,Surya. It is situated on the bank of the river Pushpavati, 102 km from Ahmedabad. It was built by King Bhimdev of the Solanki dynasty. This temple is now under the supervision of Archaeological Survey of India. Construction is marvellous. We can spend 2 to 3hrs to see designs on walls of temple. Rainy season is good time to visit. After visiting this temple we can run for Sidhhtek I. E. Matrugaya, the spiritual place in Hindu religion.

Best place for one day picnic with family near Ahmedabad

Must visit Sun Temple if you want to go out for a day with family to spend leisure time. It is good for a person who is interested in archeology and our histories. Need to carry snacks and brunch with you. Also for kids, there is a big garden space for playing badminton or cricket. For camera lovers, best place for photography. If you do not have professional cameras, don't forget to carry selfie stick. Have a fun and enjoy.

Awesome place

It's a awesome place. If you really want a peaceful place then its perfect for you. Trust me guys this place will make you think to visit again.Temple is surrounded by lawns. First comes Surya Kund (Tank), then Sabha Mandap and 3rd structure is main temple. Tank is beautiful but the upper dome of mandap and temple are broken. The carving on outer walls and pillars is nice.In main temple you can smell some bats and if you look carefully, you might see couple of them hanging from the roof. The inner sanctum is closed. When you visit temple, it is advisable that you also visit Rani ki Vav in Patan.

Fed up from your routine ?? then just ride here, capture the art of the temple

If you are a bike or car lover and you also have the same feeling no matter how bad your day was, your bike will always make you feel good, then just stand up, call your friends, and ride.I did the same, was fed up from my routine, was feeling no excitement in life, called my friends took the car and went here. The ride from Gandhinagar to here was fantastic!! A 90 kms ride in the night on the highway gave me the that highway must not end. The place is good only if you are fond of riding or photography. There is much to capture, a good art work is done on the walls of temple. However, there is nothing like a temple in here now. It is now an architectural site. So those who don't wish to visit temple but loves photography. Then this is a must visiting place for them. The perfection of art cannot be captured in a mobile camera, doesn't matter how good it is.The temple opens up at 7am but before that there is a natural lake on the way to Patan which Ifelt was a must visit place along with this, that too just before sunrise and if it is a full moon day, you will always admire the view. The sunrise time is perfect time to visit the temple as it will be hot as sun will rise once.

Great architecture

Modhera Sun Temple is approximately 2 hours from Ahmedabad. Carvings here are awesome, don't visit the temple without guide as it is difficult to understand logics behind various designs without guide. Different stories from RAMAYANA & MAHABHARATA have been carved on temple walls and columns. Entire temple is made from system of interlocking of stones, whole temple is flexible to be shifted somewhere else. There are beautiful carvings of Hindu god & goddesses, including their speciality or stories described through carvings. Different stages of human life has been depicted through awesome carvings on walls outside temple. Stepwell- surya kund- has beautiful arrangements of steps for couple to walk together. Some 985 years old temple, which was rebuild by Archeological Survey of India after 1947. Magnificent design, must visit once.

Beautiful temple, beauty till date

This Sun Temple though not as big as in Konark bit a equally spectacular architecture. This temple was built about thousand year back but retained its beauty till date. A vast pond in front of temple adds to its grand beauty. Pond still has water which can be reached by numerous stairs. Several small temples with idols inside makes it a wonderful site. A lush green lawn has now been maintained by Gujarat Government in front of temple. A must visit for everyone.
