Tabo Monastery is one of the main attractions of Spiti Valley. Founded in 960 AD by a scholar, Richen Zangpo, this monastery was established with an aim to serve as an institution for advanced learning. This monastery experienced tremendous growth and success in Tibetan art during 11th and 20th centuries.

It is surrounded by Lahaul and Kullu Districts in the west, by Ladakh in the north and south-east and by Tibet and the Kinnaur Districts in the east. This monastery is the oldest functioning Buddhist monastery in the Himalayas and in India. It is famous among tourists for its sculptures, paintings, exclusive wall texts and inscriptions.
