Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple Overview

Ranked 5 of 35 sightseeing in Dehradun

Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple, in the outskirts of the city, is located at a distance of approximately 5.5 km from the city centre. Sprawling on the banks of seasonal river, this cave temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The name of the temple has been derived from the Hindi word Tapak, which means to drop. Water drops naturally on the Shivaling established in the cave from the ceiling and hence, it was named as Tapkeshwar Temple.According to legend, Lord Shiva made milk flow for son of Rishi Dronacharya, Ashwathama.

In addition, there are cool sulphur springs located around the temple, which are believed to have therapeutic value. Hence, these springs are ideal points for tourists to take a dip while visiting the temple. Tourists, especially devotees, visit this temple during the festival of Shivaratri and pay homage to Lord Shiva and His wife, Goddess Parvati.

Pleasant temple

We visited Tapkeshwar temple during our visit to Dehradun and Mussoorie. The temple has a stream of river running through it. This stream is a tributary of Yamuna river. The presiding deity is a swayambu lingam and on the day we went we got to be part of a nice Pooja and aarathi. Overall felt very blessed

Divine Temple to free our stress

The cluster of Temples in this complex consists of various Hindu Gods for worship with Tapkeshwar Mahadev being prime deity. Darshan of Vaishno Devi thro' the Caves gives a feeling of total surrender to the God. This temple is a must for all Hindu tourists going to Dehradun and Mussoorie.

A peaceful place a nice to spend quality time

Whenever you go there you will spend quality time, you will feel internal peace. You will be surprised at some levels, people are friendly and honest there. A small river or you can say say a little fall complete the place.

Religious place

This is not exactly a place for sightseeing, but it is a place of faith and having lot of religious significance. If you are looking for sightseeing this is not the place to be in. The caves are also small and not that attractive.

Temple in a scenic backdrop

Firstly the scenic backdrop is exquisite. The sound of water flowing through adds to the charm. The cave is something which most people wouldn't have experienced before. The caves drip water droplets and the Shivling is strategically placed under this natural water. Hence the name "Tapkeshwar Mahadev" came into exit.

Temple in natural beauty

The Temple is a unique one where one can experience the wonders of nature. The natural cave, the abode for Lord Shiva is one of its kind as the water dripping from the natural cave creates a beautiful ambiance. It is surrounded by natural beauty all around with then hilly stream ornamenting to the cause. There are other temples built around it. Overall a good place to visit.
