Taratarini Temple Overview

Ranked 5 of 16 sightseeing in Berhampur

Taratarini Temple is located in the Southern part of Orissa. It is a renowned religious place, which is presided over by Goddess Tara and Tarini - the twin sisters. It is perched atop a hill surrounded by the sacred Rushikulya River. Reaching the shrines of the temple is an interesting and exciting, as it requires climbing more than 999 steps from the base of the hill to its top.

The temple is crowded on special occasions and auspicious days like the four Tuesdays of Chaitra month, according to Hindu calendar and Sankranthi. Tuesdays are associated with rites and rituals of Tara and Tarini and is crowded on these days too.

Matha rani temple, Berhampur

Recently I have visited Maa Taratirini Temple on 25. 01. 2016. After visiting the holy place I have fully mesmerized not only for its religious point of view but also for its location and surroundings. The temple is located on the hill top of Kumari Hill at the bank of the River Rushikulya near Brahmapur city in Ganjam District, Odisha. This is one of the Tantra Peetha of four major ancient Tantra Peetha and Shakti Peethas (Vimala of Puri, Kamakhya of Guwahati, Dakshina Kalika of Kalighat, Kolkata and Taratirini of Odissa) in India. Nearest railway station is Berhampur and airport is Bhubaneswar. Taxi and Bus service are available from Berhampur Railway Station (32 km from temple). We have visited there during our travelling from Gopalpur to Balugaon. A major attraction of this hill shrine is the rope way from the foot hill to the hill top.
