Thanjavur is an ancient city of the Chola kings who ruled between the 11th and 14th centuries. The Cholas were instrumental in making the city a learning and cultural centre of India. It is also known as the Rice Bowl of South India, as rice is the main crop cultivated in the fertile Cauvery delta region.

The major tourist attractions in the city are the Raaghu temple, Swami Malai temple, Sangeetha Mahal, Lord Murugan temple, Siva Ganga Garden, Brahadeshwara temple and Kethu temple. Other prominent attractions include the Vellai Puliar temple, Schwartz Church, Chandra Bhagawan temple, Sukkiran temple, Kanchanur temple and Sani Bhagawan temple.

Ancient wonder

Marvellous temple. Big temple and it is really BIG. Wondering the architecture and usage of big stone/granite blocks in 11th century when no machinery were found.
