We had 3 days of holiday coming together and thought of a place that is just at the right distance from Bangalore. We shortlisted Chikmagalur - the road to Chikmagalur is a fantastic one- you can cruise at 120km speed - though you need to be cautious about some cows / goats crossing the roads. We took Bangalore - Nelmangala - Hasaan - Chikmagalur route. The entire route was green and clean - thanks to the rains that had fallen on this stretch. It took about 5 hrs to reach. It is better you eat in Bangalore before you leave as there are not many restaurants on this stretch Once you enter Chikmagalur, you need to ask for location - this was not mentioned any where. The hotel is located on Chikmagalur - Kadur route (just outside chikmagalur). The hotel is located on a small hill-lock and is away from the highway traffic (about 500 m inside) - once you are in the hotel / resort, you are welcomed to Mangalore tiled reception / entrance with lots of trees and parking space. (Natural shade provided by trees) As we had asked for early check-in at Gateway, we could check-in at 12:00 noon - It is better to confirm this in advance as the hotel is normally packed during the holidays. Got welcomed to a great welcome drink (coffee + honey + ginger - should try making at home sometime! ). The rooms, the towels, toilets were very clean and the beds were made up nicely -that you would expect out of Taj group. One of the good aspect of the stay was that they provided with ample towels, bottled drinking water and coffee / tea in the in-house pantry. This was just great for us as we were 2 adults ( my wife and self) + 2 kids. If you want to unwind, there is no place like the resort itself. You can take stroll or use the pool which is maintained very well. We had good time in the pool and the early mornings were used for jogging in the track, that winds around the rooms. Each of the rooms have a balcony facing the garden, you can sit here and catch-up with your family / friends. We did not mind spending most of the time in the resort itself. The games room is just basic with a TT, Chess and Carrom We just had food once in the restaurant, the restaurant is very nice - good ambience and great food (vegetarian - as we are). The staff are very courteous, the front office Manager - Mr. John was at beck-n-call for any issues (which were none) and he was able to tell us about the chikmagallur and what we can do On the 2nd day, we went to Mullayangiri Peak - if you are used to driving on Steep /Ghat, then you can try, if you are first time, this is not an option ( I have in fact advised, few of the family driving for the first time to get back) as at some stretches the road gets very narrow. But if you are confident (rather than having pointless bravado) - this is one of the most scenic stretch that you would come across. One surprise is that the town has got a good bazaar (M. G Road) - where you get most of the essential items (& also More - super stores! We had our lunch and dinner at a small Udupi Restaurant - a recently opened one called Raghavendra - It had very good food - almost home made like. It is located near the lake / - MG Road junction. If you can drive 3-4km, you can try here, if you want to try almost home made style food. It is quite hygienic too. This is better than most other - highly rated restaurants in the various other travel portals that I have seen We spent the 2nd day evening biking / playing badminton in the resort. On the day-of-check-out (the 3rd day) - we went to a near-by (about 20km towards Kadur) - Dam called as Aranyakere - this route is really a treat for eyes. You also have to drive on mud road for about 1-2km. We were told the sun-set is great when viewed from this place. Though there is no boating, the dam was full and the water overflowing on the canals is a place you can dip (be careful as the water can come at good force and the surface is slippery) - The dam is not meant for casual swimmers as they say it is about 58 feet near the wall - I would strongly urge against trying this While coming back, we took farm fresh beans, pumpkin and other vegetables. As we came back to the resort at 1:00pm and told the staff to check-out our bags, if there is any delay, the staff had vacated our rooms. We also paid some 30-40 Rs. To the local helper to get the car clean - the car was sparkling clean. You should definitely use the service so that you can drive with clean windshield. We stopped for our lunch (about 30km from Hassan towards Bangalore) - there is a big restaurant (white cap or something like that) on the road-side. Here too the food was great We drove non-stop till Bangalore and took the nice road to reach our house in south Bangalore. This has remained one of the best short-trip the family would cherish for long!
It was a good stay - excellent propery, Ambiance & facilities are what you can expect from a Taj group of hotels
My overall experience was very good. I was able to take care of my 6 month old kid quite comfortably at the resort. I liked the ambience very much, quite cool on the hill top, no pollution, no one to disturb your senses, play with the kid, enjoy nature… that's what I call a BREAK FROM ROUTINE LIFE. Even though the journey was 6 hours from Bangalore, the atmosphere at the retreat was enough for us to shrug off the travelling blues. Mother nature played spoilsport when we visited the tallest peak in Karnataka with heavy rain, but it was worth a drive in rain (Don't take this ride if you are not a experienced driver, better take a driver who knows the routes very well. Just imagine, hair pin bends, raining heavily, fog all around you and if you miss your road, god forbid Food and ambience at the retreat was great. I liked that, especially the ambience part. Sitting in the restaurant, you can see all the greenery on the hill tops, rain and fog all the way closet to mother nature! Facilities wise, the pool was good. Imagine my friends were in the pool when it was raining with a drink by their side, enjoying the drink, rain drops on their body from top and pool water hugging their body when in water. What a swim! Massage parlor was great. Soothes your whole senses. Only thing that appeared to me as a bit of discomfort is the bar and the snooker room. They appeared to be less maintained than the other places in the retreat. Overall, my experience was enjoyable and great. My only advice, never travel in rainy season, since the resort being on hill top, you might not be able to visit other nearby places like HALEBEEDU, KEMMANAGUNDI etc. But if you want to be away from Bangalore for a short break, this is the place. One more advise. Pick a room that is pool facing. The view from the first floor balcony towards the pool and the green mountains is breath-taking!
The resort was overwhelming. Truly a great experience with friends. The rooms were awesome. The swimming pool was a great experience. Overall good ambience. I recommend people visiting Mangalore to stay at Taj. Its the best hotel in that place. The view was great. It was surreal.
I went there in my own vehicle. Hotel was located at about 435 kms distance from Bangalore. Location of the hotel was very good. Booking and front office staff was fine. Parking facility was there. I had no problem to reach this hotel. Outlook of the hotel was nice. Ambience and appearance were very nice. I had no problem during check-in and check-out facility. Welcome drink was given. Staff behaviour was very friendly. Rooms were neat and clean. They provided many amenities in the room. Play area, ground, everything were there. Complimentary breakfast was given. Quality and taste wise, food was good. I visited there with my family in the month of June 2013 and it was a relaxing trip. Overall, the destination was best.
