Good location but must improve in service.

I came back yesterday from an enthralling and rejuvenating holiday with my husband, in Kashmir. It was on our list for quite sometime, so we booked everything including accommodation, transport, tickets and some sightseeing in advance. Though it was just the beginning of the tourist season, we were witness to traffic jams, queues, stampedes and cacophony all around us. God save those who plan on visiting in the high tourist season . Lets talk about the great Khyber Himalayan Resort and Spa, Gulmarg, which claims itself to be the only 5 star property in the whole of Jammu and Kashmir state Nestled in the Himalayan mountain ranges with striking views of the Affarwat Peaks in Gulmarg, India, it is no doubt a luxury property. It lies 65 kilometres away from Srinagar Airport ( 3 hour drive on top of a hill with views to die especially in winters). The resort has eighty rooms, four luxury cottages and a Presidential Suite each with breathtaking views of the Affarwat Peaks and of the valley. Out of the 3 categories of rooms, the premier, premier mountain view and the luxury balcony rooms, we stayed in the luxury room with a grand balcony. There are several dining options like their restaurant called Cloves with splendid views, Nouf a covered deck to enjoy cosy meals besieged by breathtaking sights of the snow covered mountains, Chaikash a tea lounge with myriad flavours of teas to choose from and Calabash the cigar and sheesha lounge. The Khyber Spa by Occitane is one of India's most luxurious and holistic welling spas, again with magnificent view. One cannot spend a dull moment in this imposing environment as a whole lot of recreational activities awaits you such as a fully dedicated area for children called the Igloo, a stupendous heated indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, game area for adults so on so forth. But for me everything ceases to importance if one fails to deliver They might have been recognized for their outstanding service delivery by the world luxury hotels, but I doubt it was the opinion of the guest or the staff itself. On this wise, in all humility and complete fairness, I express my analysis of the Khyber Himalayan Resort as follows:. There were security screening machines installed at the entrance without people to operate them. My husband and I were not greeted upon arrival nor was there an inspection for security of persons, only for the baggage. I saw used overcoats just lying on the ground at the entry steps without being taken care off or noticed. I asked one of the guards if mine will be treated similarly. When we entered the resort, we were asked to identify the luggage, which my husband did. Then while we were waiting for the room, another person came and asked to identify the luggage, so I went and did so. It was the height of patience when another of the staff asked us a third time to identify the baggage. It shows the lack of communication among the staff. They seriously need training The check-in time was 2:00 pm but we arrived an hour prior. Understanding the scenario we calmly waited, had buffet lunch and approached at the reception after an hour. While I was clicking pictures of the entrance I noticed that they are a part of the SLH group so I asked the reservations guy to upgrade my room. This took another 45-50mins and we were escorted by Ms. Shivangi to our room. This waiting for 2 hours killed us and wasted more than half of our day. Nevertheless, we checked in our luxurious room with a balcony and found it super comfortable and welcoming with respect to the freezing cold outside. We took WiFi for 24 hrs by paying INR. 750, which we later realized didn't work for most of the time. Also, the sliding door between the dressing area and bathroom was completely broken When we went to the restaurant to eat lunch where I met a family from Mumbai who were guests there as well. We immediately struck a conversation and they told me about the menu being repeated everyday. Like the manchow soup was served a day before and was repeated the day after. There was less choice for vegetarians for the outrageous price. I did not find the food to the standard of a luxury class hotel. I went and informed this to Mr. Manzoor, who was at the front office and asked to be spoken to someone responsible. He said he will send someone to speak to me regarding the same, but in vain. I asked twice, but no one bothered to attend to me. In my opinion, he is seriously in need of proper training from a branded corporate organisation. This is absolutely not expected of this kind of a property. If it was Taj or Oberoi, immediate action would have been taken with the staff personally taking responsibility. I usually work on my machine in the night where I require to the internet. I tried to connect several times but it was futile. Hence I called the reception, who transferred me to the IT department. After explaining the problem, he informed me that he cannot help me as everything seems to be alright at his end. I wonder why they charge for something they cannot deliver In the morning we looked forward to the breakfast, only to experience a bolt from the blue. It was pathetic. I ordered a masala dosa( a south Indian pancake made from rice batter), which was not even close to be called a dosa as it was very chewy with bland chutney. Then I tried my hands on parantha( an Indian shallow fried bread), it was hard as a rock. The food was cold, tasteless and disgusting. I again called the staff to make them aware of the situation but no one was suited to handle the situation. We wanted to enjoy a swim in the inviting pool but as we didn't carry our costumes we couldn't. But I observed a couple of children and adults swimming in the pool without costumes. I asked for explanation but they just cleared the air saying we cannot do anything, as they do not listen to us. That was very convincing I am a traveller and a photographer who want to bring back places, people, destinations, cultures and a profusion of elements to the less travelled, confined at home. So I approached Mr. Manzoor again to let me have a person escort me, show around the property and photograph it. Apparently that didn't happen either. A warning for those taking for granted that this property being a 5 star luxurious one would serve alcohol, let me speak loud and clear, " this property does not have a bar or a liquor license ", so be prepared Another letdown which came as shock to us later was the situation of transportation once we reached the hotel in Gulmarg. We were not informed of the fact that one cannot move in and around Gulmarg in an vehicle which is registered outside of Gulmarg. Even the hotel people cannot let their vehicle for travel within Gulmarg. So we either need to walk, take an ATV(all terrain vehicle, super expensive! Or hire a local car. This, what I am about to tell is rather unusual. Every time a member of the staff went pass us within the hotel grounds, they acknowledged the presence of my husband only greeting him, hello sir, good morning sir . Blah, blah and not me. I don't understand why, I have noticed this first time in my life . Overall, it is a great option to stay in Gulmarg during winters for the location, view, snow, heating and indoor recreational activities, only if they improve upon their service, competency, attitude and staff .

Amazing Property! Stunning Location !! Simply Perfect !!!

4.7/5
Posted 14 Jun, 2016

This is easily one of the most beautiful hotels that I've stayed in. We stayed in there for 2 Nights and 3 Days. And I must mention that it was a very pleasant and satisfying experience The Location and The Hotel Property - The best part of the hotel is it's location. It is simply amazing. One can have breathtaking views from around the hotel. The rooms were just perfect. Rooms have great decor, perfect size, all the modern amenities that a 5 start hotel should provide. Rooms have great views of snow clad mountains dotted with pine trees Activities - There are plenty of activities available. The best one is indoor heated swimming pool !! The pool is located in a glass room with view of the snow just outside !! This is the most amazing and unique feature of the hotel. The hotel has a separate game room for activities like TT, Pool Video Games etc. They also provide board games on request. The hotel also has a nice hookah bar where one can just chill with hookah. There is a lot of activities to do in the hotel Food - We had opted for a plan inclusive of breakfast and dinner. Both are provided in a buffet format. The food is delicious. The spread is also reasonable. Just felt that the restaurant size is a bit too small and under-staffed, resulting in slow service during rush time Staff - The staff is pretty courteous and pleasant. They are polite and helpful. The service is great. What I noticed that the staff is really concerned about the experience guest gains and they always vie to make it pleasant for them. This is so commendable Overall - Khyber is easily one of the best hotels that I've stayed in. Had a great, relaxing and very pleasant stay. Will definitely return here - may be in different season, to enjoy great hospitality and location of this hotel.

Magnificent and impressive

The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa Gulmarg is one of the most inspiring places I visited first in 1972 and then in 1974. This time in October 2015 we once again planned our holidays in Kashmir, starting with Gulmarg, then to Pahalgam and finally at Srinagar We were told that there is a striking change and major transformation in hotels at Gulmarg since 1974 and therefore, while browsing internet to find out which hotel to reserve for our holidays in Gulmarg, we were highly impressed by the positive reviews of the Khyber; and if this was not enough, I was compelled to get our accommodation preserved because I was mesmerized by the views of the hills all-around and the valley down from a distance the Restaurant NOUF in the Khyber offered. After checking in I first of all went to the deck of the Nouf and relaxed there for quite some time, thinking that we shall have our evening tea/drinks there. Thereafter we checked in our room and it exceeded all my expectations because the huge bay-window of the room gave me the same view as that while sitting on the deck of Rouf. We all know that the first impressions are long lasting. How correct is this saying Khyber in Gulmarg is in stark departure from the rest of all other hotels in Gulmarg. It is at a short distance upwards from Gondola and All-Terrain Vehicles stand. It is magnificent and impressive. It is vast and newly constructed. I was highly impressed by the architecture, designing, the amount spent especially on the quality and quantity of wood used all-around the resort. It is located on the hilltop in the lap of other hills evergreen Pine and Fir trees on two sides, hills on the third side and valley on the rest and amongst score of pine trees. Linen was neat and clean. Bathroom was spacious and with all modern quality fittings. Room service was remarkable. Hot water indoor swimming pool was neat and impressive. We enjoyed the services of health club and the gym. Complimentary breakfast spread was superb. However, in Kashmir, such a good resort we could not get good Kashmiri food. Had the la-carte food been good (as expected), the resort would get my par-excellent.

Exotic experience

4.3/5
Posted 5 Dec, 2013

We visited Gulmarg in December 2013 and it had just snowed a few days back thus hosting snow capped mountains all around us. The Khyber Himalayan Resort is a very newly established 5 star luxury property in Gulmarg. Some of its sections like spa, cottages are still under construction. Its location gives it all the advantage Gulmarg has to offer and coupled with the exotic rooms and services, this is the place to stay when in Gulmarg. There is a restaurant Cloves within the hotel premises with all sorts of local and usual cuisines. We tried the naduri (lotus stem) and liked it for a new taste! There is a tea coffee lounge and separate smoking lounge as well. The rooms are lavish and overlook the mountain peaks (in our case capped with snow and thus making it mesmerizing). The pool was closed since the weather was bitterly cold. But they plan to have hot water pool inaugurated by next year. We had planned to stay in the resort for one night and booked a premier room for our stay. We were overwhelmed by a complimentary room upgrade and now had our own private balcony and a sunken tub with beautiful view of the valley. The whole experience was so beautiful, we extended it for 2 nights and loved every moment. A definite place to relax, let go of worries and sink deep in the beautiful valley.

My visit to Gulmarg in the month of January 2017 and stayed in the The Khyber Himalayan Resort %26 Spa. It was my holiday trip with family. The city Gulmarg was very good because of its weather. The hotel location was average. I would rate the appearance of the hotel as average. The staff at the reception was good as they are polite and responsive. I booked this room directly at hotel.
