The Meghalaya Butterfly Museum houses 1,600 species of butterflies, moths and insects of distinct patterns and colours gathered from around the world. Museum was inaugurated with the view to conserve rare species of fascinating colourful butterflies and moths. Most of the species housed in the museum belong to the province of Meghalaya.

Located at Riatsamthiah, the institution initiated the breeding program for butterflies. The same initiative has come a long way, and is now developed into a full fledged Butterfly and moth anthology. In addition to butterflies and moths, visitors can also spot some rare species of beetles. Furthermore, study-oriented museum also provide a rare insight on the life span and habitat of fragile species.

Lying at a distance of mere 1 km from the capital city of the province, the place can be easily accessed via local transport.

A privately owned museum

The Meghalaya Butterfly Museum is actually known as Entomological Museum. The museum does not have only collection of butterflies but superb collections of spiders, moths, beetles etc. Entry fee is Rs 50 (Rs 100 for foreigners) and Rs 10 is charged for each click if you have got a camera in hand. Timing is 11 am to 4 pm monday to saturday.

Very high entry fee

This is of no use for the general public. The fee is the highest of all other sites. This is only for those who are studying and doing research on butterflies.
