This summer my family planned a week-long birding trip to Corbett National Park and the Kumaon hills. We naturally got in touch with our friend Imran, who owns The Ranger's Lodge guest house outside Corbett. We explained our interests to Imran and he arranged an excellent itinerary for us. In fact he went out of his way to help us in all aspects of our trip. We stayed at The Ranger's Lodge for two days and then stayed for two days inside Corbett before we set out for the hills. Imran made our vehicle arrangements and did our reservations in Corbett. He also made the vehicle arrangements and reservations for our trip after Corbett The Rangers Lodge is a guest house located just outside Ramnagar. Imran's family stays on the ground floor while the guests stay in rooms on the floor above. There are three rooms for guests on the top floor, which also has a large terrace. Our room also had an attached balcony. The room was spacious and very comfortable and had all the facilities needed for a comfortable stay. With his long experience Imran has equipped the rooms very tastefully and comfortably. We were three persons (myself, wife and daughter) and the room was large enough for the three of us, including an extra bed The guest house is located next to a forested area. In the evening Ch ital and Sambar would come to graze in the meadow behind the guest house. Imran and his wife were excellent hosts. We had meals in the dining room downstairs. Imran's wife served us the most mouthwatering and delicious dishes, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. The desserts were excellent too. The food was really the high-point of our stay at The Rangers Lodge. Imran ensured we got morning tea on the dot so we could set out on our safari trips on time. Imran helped us with all the small errands for things that we needed. The atmosphere is friendly and homely and not at all like a resort. Imran had arranged the safari trips in Corbett and we had a wonderful time doing birding. We saw some 'lifers' such as the collared falconet, dollar bird and redbreasts parakeet. Other interesting birds were the great Hornbill and Chestnut's bee-eater. We saw most of the major wildlife species, and yes, we did see the tiger and got some good photographs. Imran is an excellent wildlife and bird watcher and has an intimate knowledge of wildlife watching opportunities and options at Corbett and the surrounding region. All in all it was a great trip and an excellent stay at The Ranger's Lodge.
I met Mr. Imran in 2011 at Jim's Jungle Retreat. He is the one who induced the birding interest in me. This year when we were planning to visit Corbett once again, we got in touch with him and came to understand that he had started out on his own and is successfully running a homestay in Corbett . . This is a new concept in Corbett as all you could find out there are resorts with spas, swimming pools and DJ nights. Being serious wildlifers, we prefer no distractions during our visits to the jungle. So Mr. Khan's home-stay worked out perfectly for us. We (a group of 6) got in touch with him 45 days prior to our visit and he was kind enough to book the vehicle and our permits to enter and stay at the park. We spent a good four nights at his homestay. The family was warm and welcoming the latest addition Oreo, an adorable Labrador pup was an instant hit amongst us. The rooms are well decked up and very spacious. Each room opens to two balconies and there is a huge sit out area on the first floor to spend time after the safaris. The food was heavenly and the family was on a wafting to fatten all of us up during our stay with them. It is a paradise for non-vegetarians; family recipes like Yakhani Pulao and minced beef were a few of our favourites during the trip. Mr. Imran is an extremely knowledgeable person who is actively involved in wildlife and ecological conservation. He believes that tourism will be the backbone of the tiger conservation activities in India. He is an immense resource for any fledgling birder and I definitely did make use of it. However because of our tight schedule, we managed to go on only one bird walk with Mr. Imran. The area where the homestay is nested is just 2 kilometres from the core area of Corbett Tiger Reserve. On the first night of our stay, as we were sitting outside enjoying our drinks, we heard a continuous set of barking deer alarm calls for close to 5 minutes. During the day, just looking outside the balcony, one can sight barking deer, Langurs, Crested serpent eagle, Red wattled lapwing, Oriental white-eye, spotted doves, Himalayan bulbuls and a host of sunbirds. All in all it was a fantastic experience in the Ranger's Lodge and I would definitely love to revisit the place in winter.
This is a homestay -- a very decent and cosy place right in the heart of Corbett. Three spacious rooms have been done up in great taste for guests. Even after an extra bed there was enough room to move around. Two balconies and a terrace add to the fun. Mr Imran Khan, the owner, is a wildlifer, a naturalist, and as we learned, a member of the Wildlife Advisory Board of Uttarakhand. He has been at Corbett for the past almost 20 years working on itinerarised tourism and sustainable tourism. He has in the past helped set up two resorts in Corbett. Imran has now opened his home to visitors. If you are looking for a placey where you can wallow in luxury, this is not the place for you. But if you want to relax in the midst of nature this is just the right place.
