It all began with my son wanting to see snow! So we began the search for a destination on a long weekend with not much crowd, close to where it snows, decently priced accommodation and drivable from Delhi. Tall order! That's when a friend of mine suggested the Sonaugi Homestead in Michael Pradesh, between Kullu and Manali, near Naggar. An off-beat place which you won't find on the map! In fact, the place is so off beat that you have to park your car in a parking area and walk down the hill for a good kilometre till you reach the cottage! A word of caution - its a long drive from Delhi. Best is to catch a flight to Kullu and ask for the resort to arrange pick up from the airport The Sonaugi Homestead is a beautiful cottage amongst the Himalayas, jutting out of a hill side. Surrounded by pine trees and the majestic Himalayas, it's a calm and scenic spot. No hotels, no tourists, no hawkers, no shops, just pure bliss! The property has four rooms. Rooms are spacious and equipped with king size beds, a sofa-cum-bed, spacious attached bathroom with all essential and a traditional wood fired room heater A separate dining hall with kitchen is just a few steps away from the main cottage. An awesome team of cooks prepared elaborate breakfast, lunch and dinner to keep us well fed! The dining hall has a central fire place which is the place to sit around on the stone benches to soak in the heat! There are also a lot of books in the library which can keep you company. Liquor is not served nor encouraged in this resort The resort also arranged for two treks with a knowledgeable and friendly guide. On the first day we trekked to a place called Jana, a steep trek up hill, to play in the snow. On the second day we trekked to Naggar town to see the Roerich Museum. Travellers may keep in mind that both the treks require a fair amount of stamina as they can be exhausting to people who don't have a regular exercise regime The Sonaugi Homestead is a place where you can stay on and on. Friendly staff, excellent rooms, yummy food, lots of activities if you want to or laze on a hammock if you want a relaxing holiday! A must visit for anyone wanting to experience the real Himalayas in an off-beat place. During peak winters, there is snowfall at the cottage itself The bottom line is "You can't go wrong with this place"!
