The Thar Heritage Museum in Jaisalmer was founded by L Narayan Khatri, an eminent scholar of Jaisalmer folklore history.
The rich history, culture and folk art of Thar Desert are preserved in the form of a large collection of items displayed at the museum.
A unique collection of sea fossils from over million years ago let us in on how the sea eventually became the Thar Desert. The other items on display include documents, coins, post cards, ancient manuscripts, weapons and musical instruments.
There is a daily one hour puppet show at 6.30 pm performed with the narration of Shri L.N. Khatri, who is also the curator of the museum.
The museum remains open from Saturday to Thursday from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm. The entrance fee for a person is INR 10. For the puppet show a separate ticket of INR 30 is required.
One can also visit Jaisalmer Folklore Museum, Silk Route Art Gallery and Jaisalmer Fortress, which are at walk able distances. Visitors throng Jaisalmer in October during Dussehra festivities which is celebrated in a grand way.
The Thar Heritage Museum can be reached by auto or cab. One can also enjoy this walled city and walk to the museum.
