Theppakadu Elephant Camp Overview

Ranked 3 of 3 sightseeing in Mudumalai (Masinagudi)

The Theppakadu Elephant Camp lies in the vicinity of the Mudumalai Wildlife Reception Centre. A small camp existed here since 1910 and was declared an elephant camp in 1972. The camp area derives its name from the two words, ‘Theppam’ and ‘Kadu’, meaning pond and forest respectively. The camp has a shrine of Lord Ganesha which is believed to have been constructed during the 1970s.

A documentary of the park in English language is screened. The park authorities organise the Elephant Show on Saturday and Sunday evenings. The elephant race and elephant soccer performed by elephants are quite popular.

An absolutely awesome place if you are ready to let yourself loose. Local food. Moderate facilities and lots of Elephants, Deer's. Good nature treks and mesmerizing flora.

The Camp has a detailed list of all Elephants present in the camp right from the youngest to the oldest. They also explain the various components and their quantities in the daily diet of these Elephants according to their age and weight. A great place to unwind

A cool place to unwind oneself away from busy life of city. A real place to realize a life in forest. The best time to go is late part of Rainy season, when nature is filled with greenery. Try it.

Average place to visit

Average place to visit. There are a few elephants to see, but the staff there are very unhelpful. They don't really care for visitors much, so you have to make an effort to find out any local information.

Dont miss the elephant bath!

A bit disappointed as we missed the main attraction i.e. elephant bath. Apart from that, the elephant camp got our 4yr old excited! There were plenty of monkeys & wild boars & bisons around. This was a part of the evening jeep safari, which reminds me, never take the evening jeep safari with your family as it gets pitch dark with only strangers playing with jeeps inside the forest area. Take the early morning one.

Feeding the elephants

Elephant feeding after 6.00 PM, but most of the roads to the near by resorts close after sunset to facilitate wildlife movement. Didn't understand the logic. So ended up paying for feeding elephants and had to rush back to the resort so that I don't get stranded around.

Spot for elephant lovers

We along with 10 others in a group visited the elephant camp on 19 th of July. Though it was raining that evening. We had a great fun watching, different types of elephants being fed by the forest department officials.

Close Look at Elephants

This place is very near to Mudumalai Forest Reserve office. I recommend visiting it only if you are planning for a Mudumalai Trip as it is not worth to visit this place alone. You can get good closer look to elephants here. If you wish you can also feed them. There is a small education center inside the premises to educate people about the local animals. Overall a good experience especially for those who had not seen elephants very closely before.

Nice place to take your kids

Tamil Nadu Forest department has kept some 10 Elephants which they feed at around 6 pm everyday. It is nice to watch the quantity of food being prepared and given to the elephants.
