Thikse monastery

Travelers whove been to Tibet may think theyre seeing things when they look at Thikse Monastery. Thats because the 12-story building resembles the Potala Palace in Lhasa, only this Buddhist monastery is located in Ladakh, India.

Nicely maintained Monastery

Thiksey monastery lies about 18 km from Leh on the Leh-Manali Highway. The monastery is very old but is well maintained and a fresh coat of paint was being applied at the time of our visit. In one of the prayer halls entirely made up of wood, additional supports had been placed to prop up the roof. There is a giant statue of Buddha reaching to the height of two floors. Should not be missed.

Gorgeous Gompa

I went to this glorious Gompa on 28th April 2016, its very huge and absolutely stunning, one should not miss this Monastery when we are in Leh. There are lots and lots of monasteries around Leh. This one is very important, and it's easily accessible from Leh. Must visit for all age groups when we are in Leh. Please take your best camera to catch the action live with our loved ones, I took some terrific photos and videos to cherish.

Different kinds of paintings

Thiksey Monastery has the largest Gompa in Ladakh & is located at an altitude of about 11,800 ft in the Indus Valley. It is a huge complex and houses old Buddhist art such as beautiful thangkas, wall paintings and swords & these are well preserved here. The statue of Maitreya is 15 metres high & covers two stories of the building, the Wheel of Life, the handwritten and painted books, goddess Tara with her 21 images and the many murals of the deity Mahakala are truly beautiful. The vast Indus valley is seen in all it's grandeur from the top of the monastery which also houses the local boys of the villages who would be chosen as Lamas. Truly worth a visit and the long ride from Leh.

A place that can cure your tiredness

On the ride back from Pangong Lake, I stopped at Thiksey monastery. Tired after the long ride back, the steps didn't help much. But feeling the beautiful wind on the face was amazing; while staring at the fluttering prayer flags with the distant Leh on the backdrop can easily cure you of all tiredness. There are different temples inside, apart from a Giant Buddha statue.
