Thiruvalluvar Statue Overview

Ranked 2 of 30 sightseeing in Kanyakumari

Thiruvalluvar Statue is a popular tourist spot in Kanyakumari. Thiruvalluvar Statue is one of the biggest statues in India located atop a small island in Kanyakumari, nearby the confluence of the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean.

Thiruvalluvar Statue was built in the year 2000 to commemorate Thiruvalluvar who was a renowned ancient Tamil saint and poet who wrote Thirukkural.

The statue of Thirukkural stands on a 3 – tier pedestal, known as Atharapeedam. Atharapeedam is surrounded by the 38 feet high Alankara Mandapam. There are ten elephant statues surrounding the Alankara Mandapam that symbolise the ten directions – eight for earth, one for sky and one for the space down.

The statue of Thiruvalluvar is so designed that it reflects the structure of Thirukkural. Thirukkural, ‘The Sacred Couplets’, has three sub sections, which are the Books of Aram, Porul and Inbam.

The total height of the sculpture of Thiruvalluvar is about 133 feet, which corresponds to the total number of chapters in the Book of Thirukkural. The 38 feet high pedestal or Atharapeedam corresponds to the 38 chapters of the Book of Aram. The 95 feet high statue on the pedestal correlates to the total number of chapters in the Books of Porul (75 Chapters) and Inbam (25 Chapters).

Thiruvalluvar Statue is a frequented all round the year. There are about 140 steps in the mandapam for worshippers to reach the feet of the holy statue. Ferry rides are available from the mainland to reach Thiruvalluvar Statue.

Thiruvallar statue at Kanyakumari

Kanyakumari is well connected by both rail and road. We travelled by road from Thiruvananthapuram and our return journey to Bangalore was by train. The beauty of mother nature is very well complimented by the massive structures of Vivekananda memorial and the Thiruvallar statue built in the midst of Indian Ocean. It is indeed an unforgettable experience watching this spectacle

Open area statue in sea

Nice statue looking from the sea. It's near Vivekananda Rock.If the water level is sufficient, ferries go till the base and you can reach till the footsteps of the statue. In case of low tide, ferries won't go.

The Beautiful Statue

The statue of Sant Kavi Thiruvalluvar is on separate island just 2 or 3 hundred meters from Vivekananda Rock memorial but you can go there by boat only. During my visit that was closed due to some maintenance work. But the view is really amazing the meeting of three seas and view of their waters is really one of the unique experience. You will be surely love the ocean wind from all three sides.

A giant statue into the ocean

It's a giant statue placed next to the Vivekananda rock. It looks beautiful and the view from this place towards the ocean and the beach is great and it's a must visit place. You may need to stand on big queues for quite some time to get ferry to reach this place especially on holidays and weekends.

Amazing statue in the sea

Very well sculptured statue located near Vivekananda Rock Memorial & Sangam. Statue is Dedicated to the great Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar. While you take a ferry to Vivekananda Rock Memorial you can pass very nearby to the Thiruvalluvar Statue, which is very spectacular. Beyond the Statue and Rock Memorial there is nothing else but never ending Indian Ocean. Amazing statue in the sea. Must see!

An Engineering Marvel

Just adjacent to Vivekananda Rock Memorial. The boats skip this if the tides are high or sea is turbulent. The wind atop is worth experiencing. The views are exhilarating. The statue is huge and one can climb up the stairs inside it.

A gigantic statue of architectural excellence

It is a huge statue. The architectural skill and the engineering ability of its creators are worth appreciation and acknowledgement. We humans are just ants when standing next to this gigantic statue of the great Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar. The scenery around is mesmerizing with great splashes of the sea around and other irresistible charm of the location. It is a must feel experience to be here and immerse into your own fantasy world.
