Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) is situated in Mcleodganj.
Founded in 1959 by HH Dalai Lama, Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts was formed to preserve and promote Tibet's unique and traditional performing arts.
Formerly known as the Tibetan Music, Dance and Drama Society, this institute has artists, instructors, and craftsmen living inside the campus. Here work is done towards preserving everything that matters to Tibetan Buddhist culture, be it dance, music, art, drama, craft and literature.
Visitors can observe the craftsmen prepare traditional paintings, costumes, masks and musical instruments at the workshop.
The store at the institute has video and audio recordings of various performances, books related to Tibetan arts, and souvenirs which are available for visitors.
Other tourist attractions close to this place are Bhagsunath Temple and Falls, Tsuglag khang, Namgyal Monastery and the Norbulingka Institute.
The best time to visit this place is during the cooler months from October to March. One can also visit the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts during the opera festivals, art festivals or the annual TIPA anniversary celebration.
