Tibetian Monastery Overview

Ranked 4 of 42 sightseeing in Coorg

Buddhist Monasteries are famous all over the world for their serene locations, beautiful architecture and, most importantly, the peace and calmness they offer. Buddhist monks who live in these monasteries are the finest examples of leading disciplined lives away from worldly pleasures.

Although many of these popular monasteries are located in Tibet and Ladakh, there are some beautiful monasteries located down South in the Kodagu (more popularly known as Coorg) and Mysuru districts of Karnataka as well.

Established in the 1970s, the Namdroling settlement in Kushal Nagar town of Coorg is one of the largest Buddhist settlements in India with over 20,000 Tibetans, including several nuns and monks. Visit the Golden Temple in the monastery to experience what an authentic Buddhist worship place feels like.

Laced with religious paintings, writings from the sacred texts, prayer wheels, prayer flags, the statues of Buddha, etc., the monasteries of Coorg offer the same peace and spiritual awakening as any other Buddhist Monastery around the world. The monasteries offer a chance to witness the life of Buddhist monks closely and learn the teachings of Gautama Buddha.

The Tibetan Monastery in Coorg can be spiritually awakening, soothing and are as close as it gets to monasteries in Tibet. Kushal Nagar can be easily reached from the cities of Bangalore, Mysore, Mangaluru and Madikeri by road.

Holy place

The place where you can find tibetian culture in southindia. Its the second biggest monastery in india. Its known as 'golden temple'. You are allowed to enter inside the temple to the see the gold plated big statues over there. Photography is allowed inside the temple too. Silence should be kept inside. Its a worth visit place for families and group of friends.

Tibetan Monastery

It's the second largest Tibetan settlement outside of Tibet in India, first being the McLeodganj in Himachal Pradesh. It's really peaceful and spiritual place. I definitely recommend to visit this place.

Many good experiences

The place and surrounding villages, areas are example of tolerance in India and the values of Atithi Devo Bhavah meaning guests are equal to gods. Mutual adaptation of culture of locals and Tibetans can be seen, many good experiences and costly to shop.

Very good place with Buddisht touch

Located in the Kushal Nagar 10km distance from city proper. Kushal Nagar really a worthwhile place to visit in the morning or in the evening to enjoy the beauty of the Golden Buddha statue and other places. Mini Tibet in India and maintained in a proper way.

Very crowded place

This was my 2nd visit to the monastery and it wasn't crowded so much last time when I had been. Even though we had been on a odd week day this place was crowded with more than 200 people.Style of the monastery built is very authentic tibetan. The decoration inside is very religious and pious.Loved the whole place and visit.

Excellent place, quiet and calm

Like most Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and temples the architecture is extremely ornate and colourful. The grand hall is large and very impressive with an enormous gold covered statue of Buddha and statues of Padmasmbhava and Amitayus either side of him. The place is easily accessible by car and the roads are nice. The main temple is huge and nicely built.

Mesmerising interiors, Calm, serene, huge and beautiful

This Buddhist temple is located in Bylakuppe, which was donated by the then Karnataka Govt. To the migrating Tibetan population. They seemed to be everywhere here and settled well in the calm and less crowded population around. If there is a crowd and noise around, then it would be of tourist visitors. We had visited this place whilst on a trip to Madikeri.Coming to the monastery itself, it is simply huge, beautiful and definitely calms your mind when inside. The murals, paintings and the structure mesmerises us for quite a long time. You could spend an easy 2 hours if you are working on calming your mind. For shutter-bugs, this is a feast to their camera. There is a shop near the entrance which has only Chinese products, very few products made by them (handmade) and are pretty expensive. There is a shopping complex nearby for cheap souvenirs, most of the shops managed by Tibetans. If you are around Madikeri or on the Mysore Highway, this is not a location to be missed.

Cool and serene place

Tibetan style temples with huge statue of Buddha. There are 3 - 4 such temples. It's spread in a vast area. Surrounded by beautiful and well-maintained garden. Each temple has many paintings on its wall. The paintings and the designs on the wall are worth watching. Each temple is a piece of beauty. When there is less crowd or if you are lucky no crowd it gives immense peace to sit in any of the temples and meditate. It's a cool and serene place.

Beautiful temple with excellent architecture

Been here twice. What makes this place unique is the indifference of monks to tourists who have neither knowledge of wisdom imparted here nor the respect for silence. A must visit place. If you visit Coorg don't forget to visit this Buddhist monastery. Many stupas and drawings here in this temple are interesting. Place is well-maintained. Enjoy.
