Trikuteshwara Temple Overview

Ranked 1 of 8 sightseeing in Gadag

The Trikuteshwara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The sanctum of the temple has three Shivalingas on the same stone. It is believed that the temple was constructed by the Kalyani Chalukyan kings, who ruled this region between the 10th century and 12th century.

Counted amongst the 50 temples constructed by the Kalyani Chalukyan rulers, the temple complex also has the Saraswathi Temple and Someshwara Temple. The slabs in the balcony are decorated with figurative panels. The eastern sanctum of the temple complex has figures arranged in shallow niches, along with Shivalingas representing Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara.

The plan of the temple was laid by Amarashilpi Jakanachari. It is believed that the Badami Chalukyan rulers were instrumental in introducing this form of architecture in the region. After the decline of their reign, the architecture and tradition of the region got influenced by the Rashtrakutas and Kalyani Chalukyas.

The Saraswathi Temple in the vicinity has ancient architectural style. The doorways of the main hall are carved with figures. The temple has idols of Saraswathi, Gayathri and Sharada, the goddess of knowledge, devotion and art respectively.

Cultural Heritage

This is a unique temple complex with three lingas on a single rock. There is also a small temple dedicated to Saraswati. It is a good place to enjoy the Indian ancient architecture.
