Umananda Temple Overview

Ranked 9 of 59 sightseeing in Guwahati

The Umananda temple, located on the Peacock Island, is one of the important temples of Guwahati. Situated in the middle of River Brahmaputra, this temple is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. During the festival of Shivratri, every year, a large number of devotees visit this temple.

On the instructions from King Gadadhar Singh of the Tai-Ahom dynasty, the temple was constructed in 1694 AD by Bar Phukan Garhganya Handique. There are plenty of engravings and sculptures that adorn the rock walls of this temple. These engravings and sculptures depict the craftsmanship of the local Assamese artisans.

The engravings done on the walls include Hindu gods like Surya, Shiva, Ganesha and Devi. Apart from these, sculptures of Lord Vishnu and his ten incarnations can also be found in the vicinity of this temple.

The area where this temple has been raised is known as Bhasmachala. According to a legend, once Lord Shiva was meditating on this hillock, when he was interrupted by Kamadeva. As a result of this interruption, Kamadeva was burnt to ashes by the fire of his anger.

According to the Kalika Purana, it was believed that Goddess Urvashi who brought nectar for the pleasure of Kamakhya, resided here. Therefore, the island on which this temple is constructed is also known as Urvashi Island.

In 1897, a considerable portion of this temple was damaged owing to the effects of a devastating earthquake. However, the damaged portion was later reconstructed by a rich local merchant. On reconstruction, he also added Vaisnavite inscriptions to the interior part of this temple.

According to a popular belief, it is said that worshipping here on an Amavasya day, especially falling on Monday, brings highest bliss to the worshipper. Apart from this, Shiva Chaturdashi is another important festival which is held here annually.

The only way to reach this temple is to board ferries and motor launches available at the Umananda Ghat. This Ghat is located between the State Bank of India and the Ashoka Hotel.

A magnificent location & temple

The umananda temple in guahati is an important visiting place for tourists. This temple is 3. 5 kms from railway station and is in gigantic Brahmaputra river. The river is widely spread in area & the temple is 1, 5 kms away from bank. To reach temple boat service is available with a minimum fare of Rs/-20/- if sufficient tourists are there. Otherwise they demand high rate for journey. When I visited the location it was morning 0710 hrs & no other tourist was there & they demanded Rs/-800/- for to & fro journey with 30 minutes waiting. Due to adamant bargaining this amount was reduced to Rs/-300/- & they started their service. The temple is on the top of a hill which is well maintained. Since it is in the brahmaputra river the location is very beautiful & photogenic. We see there the deity of parvathy shiva & hanuman. The entire temple complex & surroundings are extremely beautiful. Moreover the journey in the gigantic brahmaputra river is also a good experience. So guahati visitors must definitely visit this parvathy temple.

Good location

We took a motorboat (country boat fitted with motor) to Umananda Temple which is located in an island in the river Brahmaputra. Be cautious at bargaining with the local boatmen. One of them asked for Rs. 150/- per head (our family consisted of 4 persons) if we share a boat and Rs. 1000/- if we take it exclusively. Another person approached us when we refused the first and took our way back. This person offered us to take to the island for Rs. 500/- exclusively and wait as long as we don't finish our sightseeing. We readily agreed and without any hassle we completed the sightseeing.

Worth the visit - Adventurous!

The temple is located in a small island (namely Peacock Island) and surrounded by the mighty Brahmaputra river. The ferry ride to the island was amazing as we went in the rainy season, so it was more thrilling ride. The island has an ancient Shiva temple. Visit the temple and explore the island. Calm, peaceful and full of scenic beauty in and around the island. There are smalls shops to buy puja items or for local shopping too.Definitely it was worth the visit.
