Upper Bhawani Lake Overview

Ranked 27 of 49 sightseeing in Ooty

Upper Bhavani Lake is situated at a distance of 10 km from Korakundah and over 20 km from Avalanche. The route to Upper Bhavani is replete with sholas trees and the entire area is a wildlife habitat. Tourists can go for trekking from Bangithapal through Sispara to the Silent Valley. For trekking in this region, it is necessary to get permission from the forest department.

There is a huge dam on this lake, which is the major source of water for the nearby regions. This Upper Bhavani Dam is just 60 km from Ooty and is the ideal way to reach the Mukurthi National Park. There is a wildlife sanctuary at this place, which covers an area of 70 sq. km and is home to Nilgiri Tahr. This sanctuary also features sambhar, giant squirrels, leopards, tigers, jungle cats, wild dogs and jackals, among others.

The entire region of Upper Bhavani, which gets over 5000 mm of annual rainfall, is dominated by the sholas and wattle plantations. This place is the perfect location for hiking, trekking and walking holidays. With the reservoir in the backdrop, there are few guest houses in Upper Bhavani for overnight stays.

Never go to this place

I had browsed the internet and read the review saying this place is worth seeing, splendid, etc but seriously guys do not go with those reviews, I bet once you go there you will regret, it is ditto as avalanche dam which is just closeby to Ooty and this is damn very far from Ooty and you will have to pay Rs 600 for the permission from the forest department, you will have to wait to get that and there are too many restrictions that you have, not to get down in the road in the forest area as there is danger of the wild animals and with all these restrictions and paying Rs. 600 it is not worth visiting that place, guys if you do not believe you experience yourselves and you will come to know what I am telling you. Visit Coonoor instead of wasting time going to Upper Bhavani. There is no hotel available there you will have to pack your food to go there and if you dare open your food packet outside around 200 crows will come there as if to attack you for the food. Not recommended to families as the place is very isolated.

Best of Ooty

Route to Upper Bhavini Lake is best part of the tour. Booking counter opens at Avalanche Forest check post at 9. 30AM. No forest permits required if you are visiting Upper Bhavini from Avalanche Forest check post in forest department vehicles. If you are lucky you can spot animals like Bison, Black Langoor and Nilgiri Marten on the route.

Must see Lake

The vast expanse of water will make you wonder if this is Lake or Ocean! The enroute, waterfalls and Bhavani Amman temple are excellent and must see. The route to the Lakkidi Lake is like so beautiful and pollution free air is natural oxygen - very rejuvenating. The eco tour in Avalanche is once in lifetime trip not to be missed out at any cost!

Truly serene and natural beauty

It's a beautiful lake with clean blue water surrounded by range of green hills. If you are travelling from Mussoorie to Ooty then it's first sightseeing spot, best to reach here around noon time and this place looks best on a sunny day. Clear blue sky mixed with blue water of lake and green surroundings truly make it best attraction in Ooty. You can take a boat ride across the river which is worth the time as you get to see far end of lake which is as beautiful as other parts. Best part of this place is cleanliness around the lake. So all in all a must go destination, it's the best attraction in Ooty.

Stylish and Natural look of the Lake

The largest and one of the best Lake found in Ooty, this is a place of beauty. Along the coast lines are found various tourist joints and houseboats. The bird is an added attraction and a hot spot for tourist. One can wile off time glancing at the Lake and experiencing the wind flow along this large stretch. Infrastructure could be improved to tap this great resource for tourist.
