Temple of Lord Shiva

We started early morning at 7:30 from Rameshwaram by our taxi for Devipattinam, Uthirakosamangai and Thirupullani as a day trip from Rameshwaram. We Visited Mangala Natha Swamy Temple. A really beautiful and serene temple. There is a divine feeling when you enter the temple. This temple is having around 3000 years old with a beautiful Gopuram with beautiful carvings throughout the temple. As you walk around the temple on your left side you will see directions for the emerald Natarajan temple. The deity is supposed to be made of emerald however you can see this only on special days, other days the idol is covered with sandalwood paste, I believe to cool down the effect of the idol. Here a Sphatik lingam is kept in a box and poojari gets it from box and put on a special spot in front of main deity and performs abhisheka with various things. After completing abhishekam and after clearing the shivling is put back in Box. This is a daily routine and we witnessed the process just at two feet distance and having seated on earth just near sphatik lingam. This abhishekam starts at 12:30 pm everyday. Then we took Prasad of rice, and Dal with buttermilk in the temple. There is also a big temple of Goddess Parvati also in campus. A lifetime memorable visit.

Very old temple and has a tree which is 3000 years old

Ramanathapuram is 116 kms from Madurai and just 60 Kms from Rameswaram, well connected by bus as well as train. It is also known as Ramnad. It has many places worth seeing around it and all can be reached in one day, if you have own vehicle like hired taxi or bike.Best time to visit is November to January. We started early by bike from Ramnad to Devipattinam and returned to Ramnad before 11 AM, had lunch in Ramnad. Then we headed for Uttarakosamangai (17 Kms), from there Thirupullani (10 Kms) followed by Sethukarai (04 Kms) and back to Ramand.People here know only Tamil and English, however people in Ramnad city can understand little Hindi. Only south Indian dishes like idli, dosa, uttapam, rice sambar and paratha are available.Uttar Kosamangai: 17 Kms away from Ramanathapuram, well connected by bus from Ramanathapuram bus stand. Its a very ancient Lord Shiva temple, considered to be 3000 years old. 3000 years old Ilanthai Tree(Ziziphus jujuba) is present here. This tree age is certified by Archaeological department. This tree is the sthala viruchigam (temple tree). So this temple is considered to be 3000 years old. This is the place where Lord Shiva transferred the secrets of Vedas to Parvati. The main attraction of this temple is a statue of Nataraja made of emerald which is about 5 and 1/2 feet tall.
