Vallakottai Murugan Temple Overview

Ranked 2 of 4 sightseeing in Sriperumbudur

Vallakottai Murugan temple is around 1200 years old and is situated in the Vallakottai Village. The prime attraction of the temple is the 7 ft long statue of Lord Murugan, which is the tallest idol of the deity in Tamil Nadu. The statues of consorts of Lord Murugan, namely Teyvayanai and Valli, are placed on either side of the statue of Lord Murugan.

According to the mythology, the temple was constructed by King Bhagareethan. Advised by Sage Dhurvasur, the king worshipped Lord Murugan to get back his kingdom. Another legend states that Vallan, a demon, used to torture the Devas. On request of Devas, Lord Murugan, defeated the demon and brought peace to the region.

The temple tank, known as the Vajra Theertham, is believed to have been established by vajra-ayudham of Lord Indra. This tank was used by Lord Indra to worship Lord Subramanya. The statues of Utsava Murugar, Sri Ambaal, Sri Shanmugar and Sri Vinayagar are also enshrined in the temple.

Beautiful carvings of Thapas Kamakshi and Lord Rama embracing Sri Anjaneyar are carved on the pillars of Ardha Mandapam. The Thai Poosam, Skanda Sashti, Tamil New Year’s Day and Aadi Krithikai are some of the festivals celebrated at the Vallakottai Murugan Temple.
