Vayalur Murugan temple is one of the famous pilgrimage spots at Tiruchirapalli, situated at about 9 km to the west. Vayalur Murugan temple, dedicated to Lord Muruga, is a must-visit for the devotees of Lord Shiva as well.

It is believed that Arunagiri Nathar was blessed by Lord Muruga and also received initiation for the composition of his work 'Thirupugazh' from at this place. The temple is surrounded by green fields and it also has a Shakti-Teertham in its vicinity.

Vayalur Murugan temple, built around 1200 years ago by the Cholas, includes many shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva within its premises. The shrines of Nataraja and Sri Poiya Ganapati can be seen in the sanctum sanctorum. Valli and Deivanai, the consorts of Lord Muruga, are also enshrined in this temple.
