Vennimala Sree Rama Lakshamana Perumal Temple is believed to have been constructed by Cheraman Perumal on the advice of Kapila Maharshi, a Vedic sage. A hunter named Iravi enshrined some of the idols in this temple.

The inner sanctum of the temple has idols of Lakshmana Perumal and Lord Rama. The entrance of the west-facing shrine is adorned with the dwara gopura, constructed in the Kerala style of architecture.

The Sopanam and pillars of the mantapa are carved using brass membranes, while the balconies of the shrine are decorated with daru silpas or wooden idols of Lord Shiva, Ravana, Lord Venugopal, Lord Rama and Goddess Mahalakshmi.

The inner prasada or the courtyard has the main shrine and the namaskara mantapa. The namaskara mantapa has four pillars that have been constructed with teak. The sanctum of the shrine has been constructed in stone, while the mukha mantapa features wooden panels and stone pillars.

This temple hosts annual celebrations of Arattu that begins from Rohini in Makara and ends at Rohini in Kumbha. During this festival, the Ramayana is enacted along with the Vennimala Koothu. The shrines of Lord Krishna, Lord Ganapati, Lord Nagaraja and Lord Yakshi are also present within the temple complex.
