Virupaksha Temple Overview

Ranked 3 of 40 sightseeing in Hampi

The Virupaksha temple, the most famous and important temple of Hampi, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is situated very close to the Tungabhadra River. The local bus also stops close by. It is one of India’s oldest functioning temples, since the 7th century AD, the time when it was constructed.

Much smaller in size at the time, it only had a few shrines that had the gods and goddesses. Gradually as time passed, under the interest shown by many Hindu kings, the temple became bigger with the addition of other shrines, lamp posts, towers, pillars and also a temple kitchen.

The temple walls have carvings that are different in genre from each one. Each carving sequence has a historical or mythological story behind it. Some of them are carved just for the simple reason that they are auspicious.

It may take an hour or so to go around exploring the temple. Usual temple rituals can be observed in the morning and in the evening. Inside there is a shrine for the Virupaksha and a shrine for the sage Vidyaranya.

Beautiful Gopuram and an ancient temple

The Virupaksha Temple is located at the entrance of Hampi and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The gopuram of the temple is the main attraction, and it looks like a 3D projection.

Enchanting environment and Great landscape

Great landscape, divine experience of Kishkindha, the birthplace of Lord Hanumanji. A real taste of great dynasty. And above all the grand Virupaksha temple with the divine presence of Bhagwan Mahadev.

Most popular temple complex in Hampi

Situated on the banks of Tungabhadra river, Hampi holds the last remnants of the lost empire of Vijayanagara empire. The Virupaksha temple is one of the oldest active temples which date back to 7th century AD.This is the only living temple in Hampi which means pujas are still performed here. This also means that you need to remove your footwear to enter the temple.

Lord Shiva in Hampi

After watching several times on Travelxp I couldn't resist myself for this beautiful temple. Yeah I am talking about the Virupaksha temple Hampi. The temple is pure marvel of architecture and history. Though you would find very rare lord Shiva temple in south india and this is one of them. A huge premises fully furnished with stone gives you amazing experience. This is really something can be felt by heart the spirituality the fine work of art and royal history. I felt like I was being filmed there for a historical movie shoot. It was completely one of best thing I saw in 2016.

Similar as any other temple in south india

Its was a pleasant experience to visit the temple and pray. The architecture looks similar to any other temple in south india.I did not find any guide around like we had got one in Vittala temple. The travel to the temple has many small temples on the road, its a different expereinece travelling through rocks which are well sculpted.

Very good temple. Beware of monkeys

Usually this temple is little crowded than other sightseeing in Hampi. The entrance will be really beautiful to watch during sunset. Beware of monkeys if you are carrying food items. Inside the temple you will find sculptures build and pillars across the temple. A small shiv temple will be inside like a cave under the pillars.

Mesmerising Architecture

Virupaksha temple, one of the living temples in Hampi stands tall. This is the first place you see when you get down at Hampi bus stop. Dedicated to Lord Shiva this temple is Largest in Hampi and attracts tourists and worshippers equally. If you love architecture and heritage buildings this place is like a goldmine. You just can't stop admiring the various statues and paintings inside the temple.

The only temple where pujas are conducted even today

This is a temple dedicated to lord shiva and this is the only temple where pujas were conducted even today. This is one among the group of temple monuments in this particular spot. It is recognised as world heritage centre and is under ASI. This is at the bazaar complex of Hampi. We were told that people use to live here around even till a few years around. At the entrance to the left one can see a bull structure with 2 heads which is unique. Marriage festival of lord Virupaksha and Pampa is celebrated even today in December. Do carry water, cap, umbrella, shoes, camera as this place is very hot.

Ancient temple with lots of history

The Virupaksha temple offers a window into King Krishnadevaraya's historic reign. It is beautifully maintained and the government ran a restoration campaign a decade ago. However inside the main temple, the paintings on the ceiling are from the 16th century. There is a temple Elephant, Lakshmi, also present (but only till 2018) so you can feed her. If you have a phobia of Monkeys, do not go to this temple. There are almost hundreds of Monkeys and Langurs inside the temple. I would highly recommend getting a local guide to help you understand the history behind this piece of art. Nearby is the famous Mango Tree cafe where you can grab some great food and relax, away from the blistering heat.
