Visapur Fort Overview

Ranked 1 of 28 sightseeing in Khandala

Visapur Fort has a huge plateau surrounding it. Located to the east of Lohagad Fort, it is famous for its protective walls and intricate designs. In the forest at the centre of the fort lies the guards' residences in ruins. A gun turret made of copper lies to the right side of the fort. Between Visapur and Lohagad Forts, there is a pass of 1 - 15 furlongs.

From the railway bridge at Lonavala Station, tourists can catch a glimpse of a semicircular pass. Folklore legend states that this valley was crossed by a brave woman on a rope. Located at an altitude of nearly 4,000 ft above sea level, the fort can be reached by a trekking expedition. Built during the rule of the Maratha dynasties, the fort was used by Chhatrapati Shivaji to watch the movements in the downhill and the plains.

For starters great trekking experience to begin with

Visapur is ancient fort well known around this area but sadly lesser known outside. Great trekking place, better plan a trip in big group, chances of getting lost in the woods is more. Carry adequate food and water, best way to start is from Malavali station which is little away from Lonavala. One of the best trek I have had, recommended.

Awesome fort, fresh air, variety of trees and butterflies

I've been to many forts but Visapur fort of Pune was the best one and I must say everyone should visit this fort once in their life. Awesome structure, view from the mountain and fresh air of the various varieties of trees. Seen a lot of butterflies which are never seen in Urban side like Mumbai.

Great place for trekking enthusiasts

It is a pure delight for people who love trekking. The fort is in ruins but it has some spectacular views. It is on the same plateau as Lohagad fort. Visapur Fort is larger and at a higher elevation than Lohagad Fort.
