Vizianagaram is the district headquarters of the Vizianagaram District. This city is surrounded by forts that depict the glory of the past rulers. Besides the forts, the city is also famous for an ancient temple of Pydithalli Ammavaru. According to a legend, the reincarnation of the presiding deity called Pydithallamma is that of the daughter of the Pasupati royal family.

Local people believe that after taking the blessings of this goddess, a devotee can lead a happy life. The idol enshrined in this temple was discovered on the auspicious day of Vijayadasimi in the year 1752. Since 1752, this occasion is marked by an annual jatra, which is held every year on 21st and 22nd October.

Another popular temple in the region is the Moddukovillu Temple which is famous for the double coloured Shivalinga. The Shivalinga depicts the male and the female aspects of the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to popular belief, this temple was built by an old woman who dreamt about it when she was on her way to Kashi.
