Wagah Border Overview

Ranked 2 of 45 sightseeing in Amritsar

Attari Wagah Border is the only road border crossing between India and Pakistan. Often known as Berlin wall of Asia, this border lies on the Grand Trunk Road between Amritsar and Lahore. On this border, a retreat ceremony called 'lowering of the flags’ is held every evening, since 1959. During the ceremony, Border Security Force (B.S.F) of India and the Pakistan Rangers soldiers perform energetic parade.

This 40 to 45 minutes ceremony takes place every evening before sunset at the Wagah Border. As the sun sets, the iron gate at the border is opened and the flags of India and Pakistan are lowered and folded by their respective soldiers. The ceremony ends with a  handshake between the soldiers of both the countries. Wagah Border opens between 10 am and 4 pm, while the flag down ceremony starts at 4:30pm and ends with the national anthem at 5 pm.

Located around 28 km away from Amritsar, Attari Wagah Border can be reached by buses, taxis and auto-rickshaws.

Sound of Patriotism

This place will give you chills. This place will give you purpose. You'll start feeling something shaking inside your body when you'll see our Jawans doing parade at the Wagha Border. The attitude in the eyes and style of walking will pound your heart. In short you'll feel proud of being an indian . Please visit once in your lifetime. Also get yourself booked if you want to get better view. I have no idea if it is paid but it's done in morning I had lost the change of knowing it and please reach at least by 3 PM

Beating the Retreat at Wagah border

Extremely disappointed with the program . . Had very high expectations of the show which turned out to be a catastrophe. The show is disgraceful & a disrespect to the national Flag. The high pitch Hindi film music being played & the bhangra dance of the crowd, even if it is accepted for the sake of argument but all throughout the parade a BSF Jawan inciting the public to shout was too indecent. Showing of muscle by the Jawans to Pakistani counterparts was too ugly specially this being a solemn ritual. The Jawans constantly adjusting headgear & Rifle shows they haven't done proper training or practice. Overall it was, in my opinion, too unprofessional & below the dignity. It gave a very poor impression to the foreigners, present there.

Excellent experience

It was excellent experience. We left early by 2 PM based on the advice by hotel staff and yet only reached the stadium only by around 4 PM. I think one should leave by 1 PM or even earlier to get good seating options. There also seems to be booking entrance for which it seems one needs to prebook with BSF office, I am not fully aware of the process for this, but it seems they got better vantage points to view. The day we went we were told there was around 1. 2 lakhs visitor on the Indian side by one of the Jawans,

Enthusiastic Regiment

The Wagah Border ceremony daily performed as a closing ceremony by the BSF will surely excite you and the thrill will be on some another level. For a general public this auspicious celebration makes you so much enthralled with pride and honour. The Josh of our jawans will take you breathless, the shouts, the shootings, it is purely a ceremony worth attending once in your life.

If you go to Amritsar definitely go here

This is just a fanfare that happens everyday but it is an enjoyable one. With all the patriotic songs playing and the slogan shouting you will end up feeling so patriotic. It is a great feeling to sit amit thousands of people and cheering for India. The gallery is large enough to accommodate a thousand people but the number of visitors coming are also quite high. So please ensure you reach the venue as early as possible. I guess they open the gates (And start frisking visitors) by 4. So reach the venue much before that to ensure you get frisked soon and find a great place to sit and watch the show. Please do not carry any bag. Wallet is allowed. There will be water and snacks being sold in the gallery so don't panic when the hawkers tell you that nothing will be available inside.
