The homely and comfortable environment has made us fans of these roadside shacks, and let's not even get started about the lip smacking food and the aromatic chai & rus that we get to enjoy on a chaarpai. No five star restaurant can match that ambiance.

HolidayIQ Traveller Zoobie Sidhu says, “We drove from Mohali to Amritsar. The road till Jalandhar is excellent, but from Jalandhar to Amritsar, the road widening project is on. So there are diversions and traffic moves in single lane. This can be very frustrating with slow moving traffic slowing down the entire trail. There are good roadside dhabas all along. We stopped at McDonalds in Jalandhar on our way to Amritsar and at Haveli in Jalandhar on our way back. There is Lucky Dhaba next to Haveli, which is an older restaurant. Both of these are highly recommended."

Signature Dishes: Shahi paneer, dal makhni and kheer

Dhabas are not just about the exceptionally yummy food but also the people. The legendary hospitality that they give their guests is better than a 5 star hotel. Bold textures and hearty ingredients are what make their food unique and delicious. Sharma Dhaba is a favourite among Bollywood stars, it was an old haunt of Dharmendra. The establishment is family-run and prides itself on fresh ingredients. The naans are cooked in milk that's fresh and does not come out of a packet.

Travelling on a highway is always dotted with memories, and for most travellers these are related to stopping at a local dhaba (roadside eatery).  Mr Sanjay Dhaba on Srinagar-Leh Highway is one such place. It is nothing more than a roughly maintained concrete shack, this place is still a paradise for travellers. You will see many foreign travellers basking and having black tea here. However, as an Indian you will love to savour the freshly prepared aaloo parantha and gobhi ki sabzi along with a refreshing cup of tea. Giani Da Dhaba is an old and popular pit stop for travellers headed towards Kasauli.
