The indigo-painted houses around the Mehrangarh fort in Jodhpur lend a bluish hue to the whole city, especially when perceived from a distance. Surprisingly not many know about the origin of its alias. One of the theories states that in ancient times the upper caste Brahmins began painting the houses blue to differentiate themselves from the others. Soon, non-Brahmins got in on the act too. Thus the city of Jodhpur is bathed in blue now.

“Jodhpur is known as blue city and sun city also the blue city- because most of the house are painted with indigo blue color. Mehrangarh fort, Jaswant Thada and Umaid Palace are the best attractions of Jodhpur. There is much architectural heritage (Ratan Vilas and Devi Bhawan) in Jodhpur” shares HolidayIQ traveller Sanjay Rajwani.

Also known as the ‘yellow city’ because the sand imparts a golden shadow upon the city of Jaisalmer. Jaisalmer was built on the foundation of yellow sandstone, which further justifies its tag as the 'Golden City' of India. Built by the Bhati Rajputs, Jaisalmer showcases interesting architecture, intricately carved sculptures and strategically built forts.

“A land of sand and yellow sandstone welcomes you as you enter the district of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, India. Beautiful filigree work on yellow sandstone adorn the structures all around and so while the Sun is up there, you see gold and gold everywhere. Sightseeing in the only living fort of yellow stone is remarkable and the visit is incomplete without a camel ride in the desert and spending a night in the camp in the midst of sand dunes. Plenty of shops in the town with local handicrafts makes shopping a memorable experience. On top of it all, the friendly people of the place make you feel always at home.” shares HolidayIQ traveller Ujjal Banerjee.
