1. Live in a Shikara

To completely understand why Srinagar is considered heaven on earth, one must stay in a shikara on the beautiful Dal lake. It is also known as 'Srinagar's Jewel' or 'Jewel in the crown of Kashmir' because of its surreal beauty. Observe a blanket of mist shrouding the lake in the wee hours of the day. HolidayIQ traveller Gurwinder says, "Dal lake is the most beautiful lake in Srinagar especially in night fells like in Venice. We had a Shikara ride in Dal lake for almost 3 hours and it was fabulous one."

2. Get lost in the greenery of Sonamarg

The name Sonamarg means ‘Meadow of Gold’. It is indicative of the carpet of golden flowers this place gets covered with in spring. In winters however, the place is a reminder of those Yash Chopra movie shot in Switzerland. HolidayIQ traveller Chirag says, "It was a one day stay for us in sonamarg. The place just had a mesmerising beauty of itself. With glaciers and mountains all over, the cool breeze flowing spellbinds you."

3. Gondola ride in Gulmarg

Apart from being the home to the world’s highest 18 hole green golf course, Gulmarg is a place where you can try skiing, enjoy the snowfall or just wander and appreciate the beauty of the nearby hills.

HolidayIQ traveller Prabir says, "Gulmarg is well known for its beauty, the wild flowers all over the valley and quiet location. While at Gulmarg I visited Khilan Marg and also the Gulmarg Gandola, second stage. It was not much of cold in July at Gulmarg. There was snow at Khilan marg and lot of snow at the hilltop when you the top by the second stage of Gulmarg Gondola."

4. Seeking peace at Lamayuru Monastry

One of the most beautiful monasteries in Kashmir, Lamayuru gives you that elusive peace of mind you've been searching for. It's never too crowded and always beautiful beyond words.

HolidayIQ traveller Pallab sums it up for you, "I visited Lamayuru monastery on 07 September 2013. It is a large monastery and it is very old too. It is full with ancient temples which dates back to centuries. The location of this monastery is spectacular, among mountains having the shape of moonland. Some people believe that there was a lake in this region and the moonland formed when the lake dried up. I was accompanied by two young boys from the monastery who were very enthusiastic and showed me around. I was impressed by their honesty and high moral values. For anybody who is interested in monasteries, Lamayuru is an essential monastery to visit."

5. Kathua

Also known as the 'the city of Sufis' for the many shrines for Pirs, Kathua is a quaint district in Kashmir. If there's a place where you can take a break from technology and the world, it's here. The most popular tourist destinations are Bani, Chandel, Bansal etc. River Sewa flows through the town of Bani which is known for its waterfalls, pastures and lush green forests.
