Landing at Bagdogra airport is a great expereince, you see the snow capped himalayas on one side and feel like your descending on Tea plantations untill you hit the runway! The drive from Bagdogra takes you Siliguri and Kurseong before you reach Darjeeling. 

Darjeeling is the doorway to this part of the Himalayas. Surrounded by rolling tea gardens and with jaw dropping views of the mountains, this is a place to learn so much about the mighty Himalayas. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and the zoological park are important stops. Visiting the tea estates and learning the art of making tea gives you an insight into the areas rich history and culture. 

Kaushik: It's a nice walk from the main gate to the Zoo leading to the Mountaineering Institute and back. The museum has a lot to offer for people interested in mountaineering or adventure. A lot of historical facts on mountain expeditions are available for the taking.

Yiga Choeling Monastery of Ghoom is one of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries around built in the year 1850. It is located in the silent village of Ghoom, 8km from Darjeeling.  One of the key attractions inside the monastery is the 15-foot model of the Lord Buddha which is known as The Maitreya Buddha or the Gyalwa Shampa which means the "Buddha of the future" or the "Coming Buddha". It is one of the holiest biddhist sites and is very beautiful. 

Surabhi: Ghoom Monastery is a small and serene monastery at the foot of Darjeeling. Free from all the hustle and bustle of regular tourists. It's a must visit if you want to experience the happiness of meditation and catch glimpses of the life's of the buddhist monks living over there.

3. The land of orchids, Kalimpong

Blessed with pleasant weather year round, Kalimpong is known for its educational institutions built durinng the colonial era. Kalimpong is nestled on top of a ridge overlooking the Teesta River and provides magnificent views of the mighty Himalayas. Horticulture is important to Kalimpong, it's flower market is popular for its wide array of orchids and its surrounding nurseries export a broad species of flora. Home to ethnic Nepalis, indigenous Lepchas, other ethnic groups, Kalimpong is an amalgamation of different cultures making this a very warm and inviting town. The Buddhist monastery Zang Dhok Palri Phodang are in possesion of many rare Tibetan Buddhist manuscripts. 

Avik: Situated around 75 km from Siliguri, right there waiting for you are some of the world famous orchids in the small town of Kalimpong. Also you can enjoy paragliding at deolo. The science centre at Kalimpong is also a place to visit. But the best part is the visit to orchids.

5. Travel to Nathula Pass

Nathula pass is a mountain pass is about 55 km from Gangtok and at an elevation at 14500ft deep in the eastern Himalayas. It connects the Indian with China's Tibet Autonomous Region. The drive is through narrow mountanous roads with views of pine forests, grassy highlands where you see wild yak herds and indegnous community hamlets. The scenic Changu lake is a must stop on this route.
