The Subarnarekha river follows you most of the way, and Casuarina trees line the roads at every turn. If the hundred odd kilometres of the drive do not satiate, you can zig-zag your way down the coast stopping at forgotten but delightful beaches like Talsari, Kashafal and the estuary formed by the Subarnarekha where it enters Orissa.

HolidayIQ reviewer Samyak Mishra says, “Two hours drive from Digha is the small coastal town of Chandipur-on-Sea. This is the smoothest route; avoid potholes and this route has minimal traffic. One can find lush greenery to cover most of the roadside area. Do fill up your tank, and enjoy the journey.”

2. Muzhappilangad Drive-in-Beach

The drive from Dhanushkodi to Kanyakumari is akin to a pilgrimage; from one holy city to another through greenery and wave touched shores, and clouds that come down from the Anaimudi hills to envelop you snugly.

HolidayIQ reviewer Praveen says, “Never miss this opportunity to drive through the ECR. People might warn you about it being unsafe and it is known for its rash driving. If you are a skilful driver who loves the hit the bends rather than taking the boring long straights of the highway, this is the road for you. The route is very scenic and the road is amazing.”

The East Coast Road is known to be one of the most picturesque drives in India, and many use it to drive down from Chennai to Pondicherry on their days out. But if you are looking for more, we recommend that you drive down further to the tranquil erstwhile Danish outpost of Tranquebar.

HolidayIQ Traveller Travel Bound from Mumbai says, “Tranquebar is far from the crowds and not a very popular destination but a great place to relax. The road from Chennai to Tranquebar barely a single lane road.”
